Passed visual on smog, failed the sniffer in CA
I was able to pass visual on my smog check except disconnected pcv which I can fix very easily. I have a greddy turbo kit with bov, intercooler, inline fuel pump, 255 intank pump, 450cc injectors, fmu, victorx manifold. But I failed my sniffer. The numbers are
As you can see I only failed the HC part with 88 on the 25 mph, but failed in all three categories on the 15 mph test. Especially the NO, stating 2119 which is way above the limit. I'm thinking my Catco cat may be shot because I am running rich and I heard running rich may ruin the catalytic converter. I've had the cat for 2 years.
What my plan is now is to purchase a new Catalytic Converter (Carsound) and lean out the fuel a bit to pass the CO (%). My question is will leaning my fuel out, increase the NO level? Any suggestions welcome.

You might want to make sure the next cat you get is a 3-way cat also. Those cheap 2-ways don't really do crap for passing emissions. My buddy had a cheap Catco (I think) 2-way on his SR20 and he failed pretty bad like you. Then he got a nice 3-way and passed with flying colors without changing anything else.
I would recommend a Random Technology cat. They are really nice. A bit more expensive but they should get you thru the emissions - http://www.randomtechnology.com/technical.html

i think he ditched the "blue box" but i could be wrong.

instead of spending more money, why not empty your gas tank so there is only like a gallon or so of gas and put some alcohol in(im not sure exactly how much). It should make the car pass no problem.
Also i would suspect your management is really causing the problem with you failing and i doubt just changing a cat will do the job.
What year car is this btw? I know OBDII have a much easier inspection over OBDI and OBD0

Im not using the blue box. I am using a fmu, dsm injectors and a vafc to lean out the fuel. Its a 2000 GSR. And why wouldn't changing the cat fix the problem if the cat I currently have one is probably not working.
Yes, running RICH (which your high HC's and CO indicate) will ruin the CAT, especially over 2 years. NO is NOX which is heat, wierd how is so high at 15mph but good at 25
Man, I would just do this....and I'm almost certain that you'll pass:
1) Replace the cat
2) Install the stock injectors
3) Disable the VAFC
I know it's a lot of hassle, but if you have to pay every time you try to smog the car it will add up fast.

Yeah and in the process eat away your fuel system.
I agree with Flamenco-T.

I'm also wondering if I should run stock spark plugs instead of the current ones I'm running which 1-step colder (BRK7E).
Also, does having a lower compression engine affect smog? I have a 3mm headgasket, lowering the compression to 9.0:1. The timing of the engine was tuned with str cam gears.

how about you trade cars with me, my car passes smog...LOL

you might want to pick up this fuel rail, put your stock injectors on it, and make a quick swap, and disable your vafc...then you're good to go? after you're done with it, maybe ill take the fpr from you LOL
