I know people who tow with minivans and station wagons, and they have towed Domestic V8's with them. Im pretty sure i can tow with this.It has a 5k lb towing capacity.I willprob be towing under 4k lbs.

There are many trailers much lighter than that. Just depends on what he has/wants.

Dont forget that a trailer weighs about 2,000 lbs alone. I wouldn't buy an Explorer for a tow vehicle. I had a 91 Ranger with the 4.3 V6 that wouldnt even pull a 12ft enclosed trailer empty without overheating. Check on getting a V-8 truck. My 04 Silverado with the 5.3L V-8 is barely enough to pull my trailer when it's loaded
like i said i know people who pull stuff with alot less, my dad used to pull boats with a plymouth aliance. my car weighs aboutn 2300 lbs, and an open trailor at the most i have been looking at is 1600lbs, thats about 3800lbs. not too bad. im looking for aluminum trailors if possible. Its not only a tow vehicle though. i needed 4wd, and something practical , i have all little sports cars. towing was the added feature
Ok, first of all jonyb- you're mistaken about your dad's truck. Until 2003 Ford did not produce a 4.3L engine since 1962 and even in 1962 it was an L6, not a V6. In 1991 they only produced the following

Engines
2.3L 100 hp I4
2.9L 140 hp V6
3.0L 145 hp V6
itr206- the Exploder can be an ok tow vehicle. However, it has some serious flaws. PM or e-mail me and I can give you some insight that'll keep you from further breaking the bank.

Well that was my truck, not my dad's. I am do stand corrected. Sorry for telling you wrong. I was thinking of the S-10 4.3L. My Ranger had the 3.0L. But it still couldn't pull an empty enclosed. Also, aluminum trailers can be pretty high. I priced one here before I bought mine. A 16' Featherlite was about $3500, but they are pretty light.
I'm not hating on Explorer's. They can be good vehicles. You just need to remember that when you go up and down hills with a load on it, the truck will be dying going uphill. My trailer is 23' overall, with an 18' solid steel deck. I think its 108" wide. With three motorcycles on it, and a load of gear, gas cans, and clothing in the bed, My Silverado was losing about 30 mph going up hills on my last trip. The bikes weighed anywhere from 375 to 400 lbs.
My point is that if you go on a long trip, maybe you should test-pull before you buy. Good luck with the purchase.

i didnt want a pick up and didnt have money for like an Expo or Taho or Yukon or something . I didint buy it soley to tow. i needed 4wd, i needed something spacious and i wanted something to tow when i needed it, this tackled all the spots i requested. if it says it has a 5k lb towing capacity i can only go by that. like i said i know people who tow with Astro vans. **** we towed a CRX with a Suzuki Esteem not too long ago.
irt- you've got mail
jon- nice lookin' bikes! you need boooost on that silverado now
ok not really- but a chip should help you out significantly

just because you CAN do it doesn't mean it's a good idea.
<----tows a lighter load than itr206 with more truck, and wouldn't consider anything less.
