what could happen if your chain is too tight
you ever see the AOL HIGHSPEED commerical......well if your chain is to tight thats what happens you go so fast you cant control it and as soon as accelerate from 0-80 in 2.3 seconds your stock flux capacotor kicks in and takes you back to 1980.............
lol anyway....if its to loose it can grind away the teeth on the sprokets
your fine with a 1/2 inch......nothing to worry about

HAHAHAHA
Seriously, though, having a chain that's too tight can be detrimental to your suspension settings, making your bike extremely twitchy. I'm not sure what the freeplay is supposed to be, but check the owner's manual.

Pros-
it's not too loose
Cons-
increased component wear, particularly the countersprocket and shaft
decreased suspension travel
decreased chain life do to the above
loss of applied power due to greater drivetrain loss (not much but it's there)

Half an inch is way too tight. Once you sit on the bike and compress the suspension then there is probably no slack at all. Loosen it up a bit. About half an inch with the suspension compressed is good.
