Default How do I turn one cam to get timing back on track?

My bro has been working on his g/f's car doing a timing belt / water pump change.
One of the cam gears is off TDC about an inch. It's the one closest to the front end of the car. He needs to rotate it counterclockwise about an inch. How is this done?

Car: 96 Accord LX V6 (SOHC)

Thanks!

slide the timing belt off and rotate the cam "about an inch" ? unless I am missing something. are the cams linked by something else besides the timing belt?

If its a SOHC V6 motor, there is only one cam.

He said it's SOHC V6 so there is one cam for each head. He just needs to rotate the one cam counterclockwise. Does he have to turn the crank to turn the cam?

PS <> I looked at the cams and they are 2 just like my GSR motor ...but he claims its SOHC

Thanks!

ADDED: This is my bro's id. I am on the desktop since my laptop is busy uploading....

You sound like there are 2 cam gears. In the description it is single over head. Put it in time the way you think and keep trying. I am a little confused.

That is the problem. How do you rotate the cam gear (about an inch)? The 2 cam gears are NOT connected except by the timing belt which is removed.

Align the timing marks on the cam gears. There is a mark on each gear. Make sure the crank is in time also. I think you should not do this.

There is only one cam to turn, since it soch. I tried turning it but it will move then turn bck to it's original position. The cam for the 4,5,6 pistons are right. I need to put the No.1 piston TDC.

Maybe you can not turn the Gear because the valves are hitting the top of the piston. Make sure the crank is at tdc. Other than that i am completely lost by this post.

Or put the crank so the pistons are half way down to turn the Cam gear. If you force it you will bend a valve. But you said it is a half inch. I am totatlly confused, first you have cam gears then you have one. Let someone else do the job.

Put the t-belt on and tension it- go to town, if it is off a tooth try again. I am sure after 3-4 times you will get it.

I put the t-belt on the pully and turned it that way. Now I have to get the t-belt on. What is the easiest way to put it on without turning anything?

I misunderstood the situation and it's not like my GSR.
A guy from the local honda shop came by earlier and together they aligned everything. He is now finishing the project up.

I know pics would of showed everything. But, my father has my A70 down in Daytona for bike week. He better bring back some good $hit
