Default tranny issue, whinning, mainshaft?

ok, so i determined it was my mainshaft bearing but now im not sure. When I searched everyone said if its the mainshaft it will stop when the clutch pedal is pressed, and starts again when the pedal is released. It whines louder in every gear and continues to whine in neutral or with the clutch pressed. I'm hoping its not diff. bearing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Could be the throwout bearing, or pilot bearing, or one of the countershaft bearing. Only way to know for sure is to take off the tranny and spin all the bearings and see which ones are clicking.

correct me if im wrong, but doesn't the throwout and pilot bearing stop either with clutch in or out? aren't the only ones that never stop when the car is in motion are countershaft and differential bearing?

It seems to me like it's one of the trannies internal bearings if it truely is a bearing causing the noise. If while your moving your car is in neutral and the whining gets louder with engine rpm then it has to do with mainshaft, if it gets louder as ground speed increases (i.e. wheels are turning faster) then it's the countershaft and diff. I highly doubt it's the throwout bearing as they tend to make noise when the clutch is depressed (loading the pressure plate) and I've never heard a pilot bearing make noise. Just to clear things up, is this a whine as you described or a click/ticking noise? A click/ticking sound is most likely a bearing so if you get it narrowed down to the mainshaft or countershaft/diff you can check each individual bearing out whether it's a sealed roller bearing (top of main/countershaft or diff.) or the open rollers found in the bellhousing for the lower sides of the two shafts. Normally I don't associate a whining noise with bearings only because I've swapped bearings in the past and the sound still remains. I always assumed that it was just the gears as you can imagine there's a lot more in them to make noise. Also what kind of tranny fluid do you use? This doesn't help much but let me know if you need anything. Good Luck
