Default Tire question on 16" wheels - 225/40's

Hey all,

Did a search on this and I didn't find what I was looking for. Anyway currently I have upgraded my R to 16X7" TE-37's w/ 215/40's. I am needing new tires and am trying to figure out what to go with next. With the 215/40's my speedo it off by 5-7 mph or so and I'd like to get it a little closer. I was thinking about going to a 225/40/16, but most tire manf. recommend a 7.5" wide rim. Has anyone here use the 225/40's on their R? I am thinking it shouldn't be a problem as the overall diameter is not much more than my current 215/40's, which I have no rubbing issues at all.

I know the popular tires for this size are either the 205/45 (not as much grip though being not as wide overall as the 215's or 225's) or the JDM size 215/45's (these aren't available in any of the brands I like and most start at 175 ea which isn't in the budget except for the Falken Azenis which I've had but didn't like for a everyday driver) Any help and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jason

I have 225/40-16s currently on my R.

It's an uncommon size but you can get it. Toyo Proxes T1-S and Pirelli P7000Z come in those sizes.

A quick search on the tire rack revealed the Kumho Supra Ecsta 712's also come in 225/40, not that you should get them but.. it is an option.

Big Phat- any issues with fitment, rubbing etc. You would happen to have any pix would you? The 225/40 definitely has a pretty good selection which is one reason I am leaning that way.

What about 225/45/16s? PZeros comes in that size. And Azenis 215/45/16s are effectively that size too. Speedo would only be off a little.

I haven't thought about a 225/45-16. I was thinking a 225/40 would be close for rubbing, I wonder how the 225/45 would do? If anyone has pix of either of these tire sizes shoot me an email. I'd love to see them on the car before I commit. souldigger@charter.net
