Default B17 block problems!! Help!!!

hey whats up guys, I have a 92 GSR and I was replacing the headgasket and I noticed that 5 threads in the block where the headbolts go are all stripped and the headbolts wont torque down because of this. this happened before to a couple of the other threads last time I replaced the headgasket. I think that I had to do this headgasket replacement beacuse of the other threads stripping. Why does this keep happening?? Should I trash this block or what?Last time I just had them heli coiled, but is this reliable? last time I had to have like 2 of them helicoiled and now I have to have 5 others helicoiled. I forgot which threads I had helicoiled last time so I cant tell if those are the ones that are also stripped this time around. Pretty much all of them have been stripped in 2 headgasket replacements. Did I buy a piece of crap block?? Another question, if I get a b16 block and put all my b17 internals into it, will the b16 be the same as my original b17a??Please help and let me know if I should trash this block or keep it and just have all of the threads helicoiled. Help is always appreciated

I would repair the stripped out holes and keep the block. Make certain you have the proper length head bolts, I know for example, if you do an LS block with a VTEC head you need the VTEC head bolts as the LS bolts are a little shorter and will pull the threads out of the block if you use them. One more thing, you can special order longer than standard length heli-coils that will work better than the standard length (short) ones. It could be that the weak/stripped head bolts are causing your head gasket problems. Good luck!

Another fix would be to helicoil and get some arp or aebs studs.

if the block isnt original i would get a b16, otherwise try to keep the car fairly original. g2 gsr's are pretty rare. ppl are pretty ignorant of stroker motors in ct so b16 isnt a bad choice. i am building a "stock b16" for my 90 rs. not positive but i think a machine shop can rethread your block with bigger threads and use bigger studs so that you dont need to use helicoils. btw helicoil is in bethel, ct. pretty cool they are only a town away.

yeah its an original 92 gsr with b17a. I just swapped my old b17a for another b17a block with CTR pistons. I should have kept my old block for situations like these.
So for my other question, if I do choose to put my b17a internals (crank and rods) into a b16, will it be 1.7 like my b17a???

Look into some TimeSerts. They are better than helicoils and hold much better.

hold on. time serts require machining right? thats prolly over $100. look around i found like 2 b16 blocks for $100 each, then i went broke before i managed to buy one. i hear timeserts are good tho. either way, you dont have the original motor anymore. get a b16 use everything in the block you have now except use new oem rings. it will be the same displacement as a b17 except as i said like 20 times before every1 thinks its a b16.plus you should have fairly nice compression with those pistons. would you want to race me in a couple months when my car is out. im running same basic setup except itr pistons and ls tranny. danbury has real nice racing monday night till cops shut it down. pm me with ur full setup or post it here. stock head and cams? if you goto some stage 2 cams you would get alot more hp considering the c/r.

my setup is a complete JDM ITR head with CTR cams, ITR intake manifold, bored out CTR throttlebody, b17 with CTR pistons, 4 puck ACT clutch, aem cold air intake and DC 4-2-1 headers. Im from New Haven. Danbury is kinda far where im from, I dont really head out that way too much

I know that my block has some sensors on the back of it, Im not sure what they are but, will a b16 block have all the plugs and stuff for my sensors like my b17 block??Will it matter if I use a obd 0 block from like a 1st gen. b16? Or do I have to use a obd1 block? What if I come across a 99-00 USDM block, would I be able to use it since it is obd2? I just dont want to run into any problems if I do change blocks. I dont want any check engine lights if I use a block and it doesnt have any locations to put the sensors that go into my b17 block. I want everything to match up. I want to be able to switch everything in my block into another block with no problems. Thanks to everyone for all the help. I really appreciate it

b17 is a first gen b16 with differant stamping. obd 2 block should have a crank sensor or something i think.

you shouldnt have any problems....you car is obd1 right? If you get a 99-00 block then u may just not need to hook some things up...but everything that your car requires should be able to bolt up fine.

If I leave some of the things from my block off of the new block, will I have any check engine lights?? Like if I leave a sensor from my b17 off on the new block, will that trigger any CEL's? I hate looking up on my cluster and seeing that dreaded orange light!

ur thinkin backwards, your block should have the same sensors as an obd 0 or 1 block. then obd 2 should have an extra sensor or 2. danbury is like 30 min, alot of peple come to dabury races from other towns. waterbury/watertown/new haven, danbury, brookfield, bethel, newtown, then for ny: carmel, yonkers, + brewster. i know mi forgetting a few towns but i dont go asking where every1 is from.
actually, arent you right down 34? i forget how to get from new haven from 34 but i did it last week. anyways the quickest way if i remember correctly is 34 to 84 to 6 or 7 depending where the races are.

so if I get a newer type block (like obd2) and it has extra sensors, what do I do with them? If I dont use them, will I get any CELs or will I be fine because my ecu isnt looking for the extra sensor or 2??

ur ecu wont know they exist at all. no spot on the harness no code in the ecu. look for any b16 block, if its missing a sensor just take one from the b17.
