I believe thats the breather hole for the tranny, and yes you can fill it through there. But why not use the regular filler hole?

I've always used the filler hole on the side as well.

If you can fill it through the top I would think it would be less messy.

I use that hole also, its MUCH easier since you dont have to bend a tube into a horizontal hole.

Drive the car and the fluid will settle. When you pour through there it goes right on the gears so a lot of it is still dripping off the gears thats why it reads low.

Is there a plug that usually goes over that hole or is it just left open all the time?

well i put in about 2.5 qts when the filler started to spill out some mtf so thats when i knew it was full. went i first empted it out there was only about 1qt that came out. the tranny makes a weird noise now when i let go of the clutch, it might be the flywheel but i didnt make that sound before. also it isnt as smooth as i though it would be, all well. so what would you guys think is makin that noise?

That's why you're supposed to use the filler hole in the side. Keeps you from putting too much in.
