Default Stock Parts on GS-R are Good?!

I heard many people say that Stock GS-R headers and exhaust are pretty good. They said its not worth the money to get aftermarket parts over stock components. Is this true? What do you guys think?

GS-Rs don't have headers stock-- they don't even have a header.

They have an exhaust manifold. Almost any decent header is probably better flowing (esp. a JDM model with a 60mm collector) and at the least, lighter.

I think Dave-ROR dynoed at around 160whp with a JDM 4-1 Type R header / carsound cat, AEM intake, and advanced timing. I imagine a good exhaust would add power...

That's not true at all. A header and an exhaust manifold are the same thing. The GSR header is actually pretty good. It's not worth replacing unless you get a good JDM piece (at least JDM ITR). The off the shelf DC or comptech headers will only net like 2-5whp at most. If you go cheap and get the $100 header, expect to lose power. Now, the B18a/b has a bad header design in comparison (sharp angles, etc).

Well, I don't consider a $100 header 'decent'.

As to manifold vs. header-- it was my understanding they were slightly different. Semantics.

Also, a DC or Comptech header might only net you 2-5hp, but it's definitely lighter. It also saves weight in the best place.

Many components on our cars are decent from the factory. When it comes to squeezing the most HP out of an NA 1.8L motor, it has to be decent. Thats why these boltons dont net you much, but every little bit helps.

Definitely. I probably wouldn't bother with any header besides the JDM 4-1 myself.
