Road Atlanta - ITA CRX Incar
Here are some clips from the Labor Day ProIT race at Road Atlanta. I’ve been watching too much MSNBC lately and haven’t gotten a chance to compile them.
This clip shows a qualifying lap in the rain. This is about my fifth lap every around Road Atlanta (all in the rain) so I’m still tiptoeing around a bit trying to feel where there is grip and where there isn’t so I don’t park the car in the wall like the CRX you see at T5. This clip also shows Scott Seck’s very nice ITS Integra in front of me.

This clip shows the start of the ProIT race. I qualified fairly far back. The track was very wet but it had quit raining so I was on intermediate tires. Once again, I’m a little tentative in the opening laps trying to feel what kind of grip the Toyo’s were going to give me.

This is some miscellaneous action during the early part of the race, before it dried up. You also get a shot of a very fast ITS Prelude (Fowler?) motoring past us on the straight.

Finally… dry laps! This clip shows the results of me being a wuss coming down the hill into the last turn. I got passed by two cars but got the positions back later in the lap. I started getting more comfortable with the corner late in the race. I still think it’s the toughest one on the track.

Something happened to my video camera the following weekend at Mid-Ohio so I don’t have ANY video from those races. The last time we were there, for WOR Games, it was COLD!! The temperature at the start of my race was 39F with track temperatures at a whopping 52F!! Lots and lots of first lap “offs” until the tires got up to temperature.
Next stop… ARRC!

It's not your imagination.
Last year I bought a new set of Hoosier Dirt Stockers and they sat on the trailer all season. On some days it would rain before my session and the track would dry by the time we went out. On other days, it would rain for the session right after ours.
I like racing in the rain and remember saying early this season, "I hope we get some wet races this year". Be careful what you wish for... It started raining on Memorial Day weekend at Grattan and has rained at nearly every race since then!

Speaking of Tom Fowler I thing he has probably ruined the chances of VTEC Preludes getting classified into ITS simply because he is so competitive in his non-VTEC Prelude. Although with some of the new additions in ITS it seems like the VTEC Prelude still might have a chance of getting classified.
Oh, and as always great videos.....

GREAT move on the outside of that BMW under braking! Overall, that is one of the best starts that I've even seen. Really impressive!

Matt... Much of the start came down to tires. The track was very wet but it had stopped raining. It was a 20 lap race, so there were a lot of drivers in the paddock looking at the pavement, looking at the sky, scratching their heads and finally flipping a coin to decide what tires to start on.
On the grid, there was a fairly even mix between dry tires, intermediate tires and Dirt Stockers. I started on Intermediates since I was still just learning the track and trying to get some laps under my belt. At the start of the race, the guys on dry tires went backwards and the guys with rains went to the front. After about 5 laps the line started to dry and, for a short period, everyone was fairly equal. After that, the track really started to dry and the whole field reversed! The guys on rains started going backwards while the guys on dry tires really moved forward.
In hindsight, dry tires were probably the way to go. The track surface at RA seems to dry really fast compared to the CenDiv tracks I'm used to. Maybe it was just the number of cars in our group.

Great vids!
In the (hopefully not very) distant future I'm planning on getting either a Pro-7 or an ITA CRX racecar. I was at the track last weekend in fact watching a CRX clean up on everyone in ITA.
BTW if you like racing in the rain you should move up here to Seattle

As usual, great videos!
So you think 12 is the toughest corner? As an intimidation factor I agree! Nothing like going through there at full speed and having something like a little bit of oil, etc. on the line to add to the fun. There's something about having walls on both sides staring right at you going though 12 at 105 mph. Did you notice all those tire tracks in the grass on the outside and inside (most leading right into the wall)? Well three of those tracks on the outside and one on the inside were done by our car so far (none in that weekend).
Our inside tracks lead to a slight brush with the wall, while all three of our outside tracks just keep going until they rejoin the track before turn 1. ...yeah, we've been lucky all those times!
12 gets a little easier after you've ran it enough times. It used to be my toughest turn also, but in the dry it's flat out so it's always the same every time, which kind of makes it "routine" for lack of a better word. I find turn 1 on the other hand hard, since it feels like I can always have gone just a tad faster through there.
btw, this weekend we're at VIR so I should have a clip or two of that sometime in the next week.

Alex... The whole section from under the bridge, down the hill and through 12 caused me problems. During Sunday's race, when I finally got to run it in the dry, I was much more comfortable with my alignment coming under the bridge and through 12. Still a little confidence lift but I'll get rid of that during the pre-ARRC test.
I never felt like I got T1 right. I was trying to find good reference points for braking and turn-in. Never did. I was braking too early and not carrying enough speed through the turn. Didn't help that the line got oiled down halfway though the race though!
Haha... I didn't notice your tire tracks through the grass. I put two wheels just over the exit curbing once and made a little mental note that I really didn't want to do that again.
Have fun at VIR. When are you showing up at ARRC? We'll be getting there Wednesday afternoon to get setup.
