Tranny help
I have a 94 GSR that I am having a little problem with. I am getting alot of resistance from the tramsmission when I am shifting. It feels like I am trying to shift with out the clutch. Almost as if I don't have any syncros. The transmission will shift smoothly if I let the revs drop but will grind if I try the shift quickly. Got any ideas?
I guess that really isn't a stupid question. I am pressing the all the way down and I am not speed shifting. It is hesitating in all gears under normal driving conditions.
it is a 94 and it has 75k miles on it. It is driven hard at times but I don't believe it has been abused. If the syncros wore out, I believe I would only have the problem in certain grear and not all of the gears at the same time. Any other ideas?
Your getting it in *all* gears? I syncro would be one, or two gears, usually 1&2 or 3&4 or 5&R. All gears, hrmm when did you change your fluid last?
The clutch fluid was just changed recently(@7k ago) I did check to see if it was low and the clutch was not disengaging completly and that was not the case. I also checked to see if there was air in the lines and no air bleed out.

I believe the clutch is the original unit. Would a worn clutch cause this problem? I would think the cluck would be a progressively worsening proble that would start with slipping. This problem happened all of the sudden, driving to my friends house, everthing normal. Leaving 4 hours later, shifting resistance
You can break the spring seaks. Very common point of failure on OEM cluth disks. Happenend to my friend. Mildy progressivbe, but what ends up happeneing is he got stuck in third, and couldnt' change gears at all. Had to clutchless shift all the way home . . . (in traffic)
I'll see if I can find his pics . . .

I agree mine did the same thing. Very hard to shift when it was warmed up. THe clutch was not disengaging all the way, because at a stop with the clutch all the way down the car would roll forward, almost like an automatic, but not nearly to the degree. Spring seats makes sense
I still don't think that it is the clutch springs. I can shift the car normally, there is just a long hesitation between shifts. I have to wait till the reves drop, just like if I was shifting without the clutch.
At first glance, difficult shifting in all gears would imply that your clutch is not releasing completely. You said you verified that the clutch was releasing, are you 100% sure? All it would take is a tiny bit of clamping left at the end of the pedal stroke (all the way to the floor) to make shifiting difficult.
If your disc springs were broken, I think you would hear noise from the bellhousing. Plus, I don't see how broken disc springs could prevent your clutch from releasing.
It is possible that your transmission oil needs replacing.

I have something to add...
This happened to me just recently. One of the spring housings had broken on my stock clutch. It had 120,000 miles on it, so it was expected. This caused it to not engage and disengage gears until very low rpms. It was very obvious once I got my transmission off. I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that it is the clutch itself. If you have any more questions, post them, as i will be checking back soon. HTH

I am thinking that my clutch may not be releasing completly. I am going to replace the cluth master and slave cylinder to see if that will solve the problem. I would hate to have the tranny dropped only to find out that the clutch springs were fine.
You may be right. I am going to see if the less expensive fix will work fine. I figure if I have the tranny dropped, I will probably have to get the clutch replaced amung other things. Hopefully it won't come to that. Thanks for all of the input.
I had the same symptoms and it was a broken spring retainer (seat). Very much acted like the pedal wasn't disengaging the clutch. The metal piece had become wedged between the PP and disk. Was somewhat intermittent depending if it moved or not. I admire trying the cheaper fix, but hate to see you waste time. If it were a cylinder / fluid problem, when the car isn't running, the pedal would not feel normal.
If the cylinders are bad, then your pedal would feel stiffer, and wouldn't feel smoothly throughout the pedal stroke.
Your synchros might be dying!! Even if it wasn't driven hard, the synchros can die because of a bad driver. For example, downshifting without rev matching can really work the synchros.
