Default Newbie question...

This has probably been covered too many times but need some direction on first time buyer.

I'm 5'11", 190lbs and looking to get a sporty bike...

Nothing too fancy, price range of $3k~$4k to start out. What would you recommend? GSX style would be nice although people have told me it's not the kind of bike to get for a first timer. Does it have to do with balance and just getting to know the bike?

TIA!

Honda CBR600F3!! Honda CBR600F3!! Respect the bike and you'll be fine. The F3 is generally cheaper to buy but also has lots of spares and aftermarket support available.

2004 Ducati 999R.

http://www.ducati.com/bikes/my...9R-04

Fairly in-expensive, great starter bike, and it's got a Testastretta engine, so not much maintenance is required.

I've heard it isn't the greatest track bike though, but who cares. a starter bike is a starter bike.

actually both bikes mentioned above would most likely make for great starter bikes.

What's wrong w/ you, people have enough trouble figuring out what is crap and what isn't. At least honestly help those w/ self respect and proper grammer. If you have to pick on somebody pick on the idiot who can't spell, write or punctuate.

Honda cbr f3 and sv650 would both be good. The f3 would be able to carry you into some harder riding later on as well as probably being cheaper to insure and repair. The sv is a lot more fun in a daily setting as it's much easier to push the limits and the satisfaction of riding in that curve

My SVS is the only bike I have ridden besides the MSF bikes. From personal experience I could recommend an SV or SVS. It may not look sporty enough for some, but it sure is flickable in the twisties though

Obviously someone didn't pick up on the sarcasm in my post.

I think I remember seeing a brand new Ducati 999R going for over $40,000 on ebay. This guy already said his price range was $3-4k, well under the retail price of the Ducati. I'm not trying to be a hater here, I just thought I'd throw in a little friendly sarcasm.

My first bike ever was a 02 954, if you arent an idiot and can respect the bike and everything else with a bike, you will be ok. But yeah its not real smart to just go ***** out and get a liter bike.

i'm a noob with bikes too
my original choice was the SV650.
then i found a good deal on an F3... but that was sold by the time i got there.
i ended up getting an 03 yamaha yzf 600r because i got an insanely good deal on it from a local dealer look into a late 90's yzf 600r
i've seen quite a few go for 3-4k and they're fairly new

Ahhhhhhh I'm going crazy. I basically don't have much of a commute so I don't need a car (plus imo it's boring)...so many options. So GSX's and like R6 is pretty light which isn't for me?

With all this talk about which bike to get, don't forget to budget-in your gear.

Think twice before you buy a bike off ebay. You want to check out the bike from top to bottom in person before you buy it. The silver 600r is sweet

There are four things you need to look at when getting a first bike:

1. Are you comfortable on the bike?

2. Does it appeal to you in the looks dept.?

3. You have to respect it. Doesn't matter if it's and EX250 Ninja or an R1. It's about respecting yourself and the bike.

4. Make sure you budget in gear with the cost of the bike.

Gear is very important. And make sure you wear it. Even if your running to the store. Last week I was going to my buddies work to help him on his bike. It was nice outside for once and I wanted to ride the bike. I decided not to wear my gear because I wasn't going far. I was going about 55-60 and the lady in front of me layed on her brakes. I tried to swerve around her, but hit the median on the left side of her. I flew over the median and slid a good 200 ft. or more on the opposite side of the road. Thank god for no oncoming traffic. Major road rash on my back and left forearm. Badly swollen left foot. Today was my first day that I could actually get up and walk. WEAR YOUR GEAR!!!

R6 is a great starter bike IMO. IF and only IF..you know how to handel it and not abuse it. I am in the same boat right now, and the R6 just fits my body perfect and I can handel it well. Whatever you decide, just ride safe, WEAR GEAR, and get frame sliders. Good luck.

Have you taken the MSF course or have prior riding experience? I'd go with a CBR F3
