really wierd problem with 88 civic
my 88 civic lx has a problem. it wont start. but when you try to start it it will run for half a second and then die. but if you hold the key in the start position, and pump the gas it will run, which cant be good for the starter. it sorta acts like its not getting fuel. but that wouldnt make sence if you can hold the key and it will run. any suggestions??

Check your fuel pressure and make sure your ignition is up to par. The first thing i like to do is swap a dist with a friend.
good luck.

Yeah I agree,I'd say it's probably dizzy related, coil or ignitor most likely.I don't think it's the main relay cause you're hearing the fuel pump whir.
On a Ford with the same symptoms, it's the 'Voltage Dropping' resistor in the Ignition cirtuit.
With the key in 'Start', the Coil get's 12V.
When you let the key off to 'Run', the circuit changes to a path through a Resistor, and you should see 6V at the Coil.
So if the Resistor is open, the engine will only have Ignition current with the key switch in 'Start'.
Does your engine have a Carb, or F.I?

Even with Dual points, you would have one coil and one Voltage Dropping Resistor.
Now you have to figure it out.
If I were you, I would hook up the meter at the Distributor wire from the Coil.
See what the Voltage is with the Ignition switch in the 'On' position.
Then see what it is in the 'start' position.
You can do this with a little creativity. Set the meter up on the Cowl where you can see it from the drivers seat.
If you dont see some voltage at the coil with the Ignition in the 'on' position, it's what I suspect.
You might have a 'low fuel pressure' condition too.
