please help....grinding when shifting into reverse...
Sometimes when shifting into reverse I will get a grinding sound kinda like I mis-shifted. Also when in 3rd gear especially I get a vibration in the shifter that makes an annoying sound. If I push it forward a little it stops vibrating. I'm thinking it's the shifter bushing or possibly the synchros.....
anybody have any ideas? what would be the cost involved in changing the shifter bushing or the synchros?
thanks

The vibrating could be from the shifter rubbing on the exhaust. Do you have a short shifter or aftermarket exhaust?
Also with the throwing it in reverse. Go a lil slower when you do it. IF it doenst just want to go in smooth dont force it. let the clutch out once and put it back in or let the car roll a fuzz before you jam it in.

it seems to grind even when it goes into reverse without alot of force. it won't grind every time but maybe 1 out of 4 times.
I have the stock shifter as fas as I know. I know I just got a new over axle pipe put in because the exhaust kept lowering and then the tailpipe would angle up and rattle against the rear bumper. that might have something to do with it.

before you put it into reverse put the shifter into first but dont let out the clutch then put it in reverse and it wont grind.
1st 2nd.. i put it in 2nd :D .. you should try some gm syncromesh oil :D

i use to have this problem, well sometimes i still do. What helps me is go into every gear before reverse(whcich is time taking,1,2,3,4,5,R) or just let the car rolll a bit(not alot, grind gears don't want that!!) and put her into reverse or if i'm in a hurry i just put her into 3rd then reverse. i guess i just have learned the way after years of having the car
Im sorry to bring back such an old thread but I cant believe this happens to so many people. My car does the same thing but when I slide the shifter to first then engage into reverse without letting the clutch go it wont grind. WTF?
reverse isnt synchronized.... reverse is run of the same gear as first..so when you put it in first it synchronizs for you....kinda....
this might be dumb as hell but the cars have to be still cant be in motion unlike first if the car moves at all front or back reverse will grind. car must not be moving! and like they said i have the problem where it doesnt go in like once a week...all i do is clutch in 1st then 2nd then reverse no problems then
all of my friends hondas.. including me.. the car grinds when puting it into reverse.. just put it into 5th.. then go reverse.. stops the grinding.. tell me what happens after you try this
Wow this is like basic how to drive a stick 101 class.
Reverse isn't synchronized in most cars which means it has no synchronizers like the other gears have, which keeps them from grinding.
Just like everyone else said, and like the person who taught you how to drive a stick should have said, bring the car to a complete stop, push the clutch all the way in and move the shifter into any gear except reverse. Then pull the shifter back out and put it into reverse, while keeping the clutch in the whole time. If it doesn't completely engage reverse then move the shifter into another gear and try again.
How it works:
Even with the clutch in and the car stopped, the transmission is still moving. The synchronizers stop the motion and allow the gear to be called up without grinding.
Other stuff you should have been told when learning how to drive stick:
DON'T downshift to first gear unless you are either stopped or you shift into neutral, let the clutch out rev the engine up, push the clutch back in and shift into 1st. If you feel resistance you are making the synchros work, if you make them work too often they will wear out faster.
My brother and his girl lived in Philly and she always shifted into 1st while moving. I told her she was hurting her trans, her daddy told her I was wrong. 2 years later they spent over $1000 to repair a ruined 1st gear.
If you change gears and get a grind or you miss, push the clutch back in and move the shifter back to neutral then go back into gear. That will give the synchros a chance to work, just forcing it into gear is damaging your trans.
If your reverse still grinds after doing the shift into any other gear 1st trick, then your clutch is going out. If you are trapped somewhere and need to get the car into gear turn the car off and put it in gear. Engine off, gears don't move.

I know this is an old thread, but i took apart my transmission and yes reverse is unsychronized in my A100 5 speed. I was told by Gearspeed of rancho cucamonga, that it was a bad design, and really needs to be double clutched. After seeing my reverse gear in person and the slider, its probably true because they were both in perfect condition. Hope that helps. Don't take it apart if only reverse grinds, its just a bad (simple) design.
