Doh! That sucks about the engine - let us know what popped when you get the oil pan off.
Congrats on getting licensed. You gonna come out and give Ellinger a race next year (he has the ITE not-as-fast-as-911s Mercedes).

Yeah... I'm hoping for no strange metal bits in the oil pan... May have to quickly become friends w/ Mike @ Naples Acura.
If you're curious, I was running 1:33.8 on the short course, with severe winds of 20-30 mph against us on the longest straight.
I'm sure I'll show up to a regional or two in the DC region.

Warren,
It was great meeting you at the Glen. Hope you get the car together soon. Remember the shifting sequence when accelerating goes 1->2->3->4->5 not 1>2>3>4>3..... keep the numbers increasing for a higher gear - makes the engine last a lot longer. Sorry I wasn't around to help you get the car on the trailer. We packed up and left at ~ 1:00 and I couldn't find you. Havn't checked out our CRX any further. Louis only got 3 qualifing laps in and he wasn't really pushing it yet when he had his incident when the gardrail came out and hit him. He still had the pole in ITA by 2 seconds. Too bad neither of you got to race. BTW, That SSC car that you were following for a while during qualifing was driven by Joel Lipperini. You were right in refering to him as a very good driver. You couldn't have had a better car to follow to learn the lines. Get that car fixed and get all the track time you can. I'v been racing 8 or 9 years and I learn something everythime i'm out on the track. Track time.... Track time.... Track time.
PS, For engine work I use Bob Lauer at L&B engine developement in Wilkes-Barre PA. He is the best and reasonably priced. He is a PE and very intellegent. He does a lot of high dollor endurance motor development for Ford an Panoz (sp) as well as other series like Toyota Atlantic and FF. He is absolutely the best for head work. It's a small shop and you could talk to him. I just gave him a copy of the IT rules and he did the rest.
Another BTW; The AS mustang that rolled end over end in your school on friday was my former car. Luckly it had a great cage built by Kurt Weiss that withstood the impact. Good cages might be a bit heaver than simple bolt ins but when needed they are well worth it.

Been there done that
3-2 @ 90mph.. If your lucky you will get off as easy as I did. 8 bent eh valves, and a broken clutch. The noise you heard sounds liek the same I heard which was in fact the clutch. good luck man!! sounds liek u did some great driving!!

I know the problem, Warren...It didn't rain. You have gotten so use to driving in the rain this season, that you just forgot how to drive in the dry. Hahahaha.
Hope you get it back together soon.

Well, here's hoping you only floated a valve or two and the pistons don't have breather vents now.
My GF did a 5-2 downshift at over 105mph last fall. Something along the lines of a 11rpm revlimiter bounce... and my motor just laughed at it. Cool sound though. At least now I know my MOTOR can take that kind of abuse.
Good luck...

Well at least your licensed. Good job! After my screw up in Feb., I am just getting back in the car. I finally got it finished last month & on the track. I spent about 1/2 of the first day fixing little problems. My second weekend is coming up soon! Just getting track time in the 'new' car now. Hopefully, I will license test early next year.

I'm gonna be running ITE. Yeah... I know... But what the hey. Anyhow, I'll be running primarily in the Honda-Challenge series. I'm just going to run ITE races to keep my SCCA license.
The head is coming off tomorrow. I'll bring a camera to take photos of the carnage. It turns over, but doesn't have enough compression to start. Here's to hoping for no metal bits in the oil pan...
btw - we had a Grand-Am Type R take 1st in ITE last race. The 2 front runners were battling it out the last lap, and the ITR zipped right by. Heh. He ran a 1:26 flat at Summit Point.
Oh, and if you guys get the chance to run Watkins Glen, GO! It was a complete blast. The short course was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. My average speed on my best laps was over 94 mph. 5th gear down 3 straights. Wild.

Unfortunately, 1:26's won't cut it in ITE usually... those pesky Ferrari Challenge cars and monster 911 Turbos run a little faster than that.
You could always put a blower on your car, then logbook and claim it as a NASA Super Unlimited, and it would still be ITE legal, technically!
PS- Warren, if the motor's apart, you might as well have it built to Grand-Am Cup specs anyway! I'm sure Schaeffer or Sunbelt would do it for... well, never mind.

Unless he does something illegal I can protest.. HAHA, na, im not that ****, well, if he put a blower on I might have to bitch a little ...
Whew. This is one seriously stout engine.
Got away with just bending up the exhaust valves.

I was crewing for an FV guy at the Glen for a National early last year, and they said the short course at the Glen made it the fastest track in the country for them (mostly 4th gear, with a little 3rd and LOTS of braking)!!
Good to hear it's "just" some valves. /Ed
Short course at the Glen is the fastest (average speed) road course in north america. Yikes. Step on the gas and hang on!
Just got a call from the shop. Looks like I have minor scratches on the cylinder walls, but not from this incident. Apparently already been there. I'll go take a look tonight. From what I understand, they aren't fingernail catchers, but explains my oil consumption (almost 1/2 quart per tank of gas).

I remember doing the long course in my CRX. Boy, those were the days...
Till I tried doing turn 10 without any preliminary braking to set the front end for the turn-in.
Spun it!!, but stayed on the track (and better yet) off the guardrail!!

No, too big to hone. Need the first stock overbore to fix it. .25mm, which is like 10 thousands of an inch.
Sigh. It's just gonna get worse if I run it too. Fawk.

Yikes. Any idea how that got there? I mean, I thought the engine was pretty fresh.
