Need help with engine noise in 99 civic
I just bought this civic DX 1.6L and it has a loud tapping noise when the engine is cold, and lessens as the engine warms up. It has 46K miles on it. I took it to the shop and had the valves adjusted but still have the same noise. It was an independent garage, so I dont even know if they were adjusted right. Is the adjustment super critical? What other problems might I have? Thanks for any assistance.
I have this same noise. I believe it is the LMA's (lost motion assemblies), I don't know what they do or how critical replacing them is. Hopefully someone who does will reply...free bump for j00
this is going to sound stupid, but i'm serious.
does it make the noise at idle or just under acceleration?
the reason why i ask is that my car used tho make a clicking under acceleration when cold. i freaked out and immediatly thought it was the valves. as i dug deeper i realized that it was my drivers side axle.
i know that sounds far fetched, but hear me out.
when an axle goes bad it clicks when you turn. in this case it was clicking only a lot quiter and only under acceleration. after a few miles it would stop. the next morning, it would happen all over again. i finally decided to test my theory and it worked. no more clicking. this may not be your problem, its just a suggestion.
go buy a shop manual and some feeler guages and adjust the valves your self. it is more simple than people make it ou to be.

well, if we're gonna go with a bad axle, why not go ahead and check your CV joint....ripped boot = bad joint = eventual clicking. If there's grease all over the inside of the wheel, Mr. E.G.'s theory could be right
Well, I dont have a v-tech, so i guess no LMAs. The noise is not coming from the wheels or axles. It does it sitting still. Very loud when cold, and you rev to about 2500-3000 rpms. As it gets warm it mostly goes away. I tried shorting the cyls, when cold and still heard the noise, Kinda ruling out the bottom end. I have an aftermarket warranty , and would really like to get to the bottom of this. BTW what motor do I have? All I know it is a 1.6L.
