Damn time zones (hopefully a funny story)...
... Living in NJ, I have been pretty lucky when it comes to watching F1 races on Speedvision. The time difference between Europe and my house is on average 6 hours, meaning qualifying is on at 7am on Saturdays with the races starting at 8am on Sundays. This past weekend the F1 circus concluded its season in Suzuka, Japan, meaning there is a 12+ hour time difference. Saturday morning at midnight, I watched qualifying live (awesome by the way!). When it was over at 1am, I went to bed thinking how I was going to watch the race live come hell or high water. I planned it out so that I wouldn't do too much Saturday, thereby conserving energy... Hell, I might even take a nap or two!
I watched the clock, 10pm, 11pm, 12pm, 12:30pm I'm fine. I could pull an all nighter at this rate. 1am shows up and I nestle in to bed (fatal error) but I keep a light on and two pillows under my head to keep me propped up so I wouldn't get too comfortable. The following is dialogue between my brain and me:
1:01... Damn talking, show me the cars already.
1:02... Blinking getting longer, must fight sleep.
1:04... Hey, what happened to 1:03?
9:22... Son of a bitch!
Oh well, I guess I'll watch the replay Monday night!

Yeah... it's funny... when you're actually trying to do something productive like write something out, the propped pillows seem quite uncomfortable. Try to do something that isn't annoying (like racing) and THUNK you're asleep. I've found that the following mixture works wonders for watching F1 races late at night.
3-teaspoons instant coffee
1/4 cup hot water
2 tablespoons sugar
Note that this is really not enough water to dissolve all those solutes before you reach saturation. Downing this mixture quickly nails your system with coffee and sugar... it has residual effect since the awful taste sticks in your mouth as will the undissolved sugar and coffee crystals. In addition, you'll be wondering shortly after consumption "why on earth did I just do that?!" and remember "ahh, yes... F1!"

I made it through open practice, the parade stuff, the start, laps 1-2, 5, I think 9, and that was it. And I only had access to Speedvision since I was out of town at a friend's this weekend, so I won't catch the replay. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
I fell asleep right after the rolloff, and woke up right after the press conference......bahhhhh.
Scott, who may just give up Speedvision....of course I could have taped it, but naaahhhh.......

Anthony, I couldn't have had a more different story with the same bleeping result. I get home at 6:45 to push code to production (software developer) and I figure at worst, I'll be done by 11:00. Welp, 10:30 and I am just starting to create backups. 11:00 . . . 12:00 . . . I'll be done in time (meantime turn on tv so I know when to take a break) . . . tick, tick, tick "and you can see how elated X is with this victory (X = in case you still haven't seen the results)" was all I caught and that was on the way to make coffee. Faaaaack!
The up side is I clocked out by 5:00 - yipee!

Good race, though. That turn they call "130R" sure looks like fun.

I got one of those energy drinks tonight to keep me awake on my drive from NC to MD. It worked but barely however as soon as I hit the bed I got this hot flash and then all of a sudden I started bouncing off the walls. I find it increasingly less amusing when I only seem to be able to sleep when I don't want to (like when I should be at work).
I guess I'm older than you. I decided to stay up for the F1 race. Watched the TERRIBLE remake of Vanishing Point (the original is pretty good although its a little dated) and started dozing off.
I realized I'd never make it til 1am so I set the VCR to record it. Sunday morning went autocrossing. When I cam home i fired up the VCR. Watched most of the race but 4 laps from the end the tape ran out. In my sleepiness the night before I had set it to record in SP mode
Luckily Speedvision has the re-air.

Alan

Which energy drink? I found that the cold bottles of Starbucks Mocha's work pretty well for road trips. I had to down about 4 of them last night driving 5-1/2 hours back from a race in Spokane. I actually made a lane change I don't remember making. Man I hate sleep driving.
Having tested many an energy drink... I can say that Jones Soda Co's "Whoopass" is the most potent I have ever had. You can basically feel the stuff hit your system... I'm not sure if that's entirely healthy, but it does make you hyper very very quickly. It tastes much like Flintstones vitamins. KMX tastes pretty good, but if you think "I need NOS. lots of it" for your nervous system... I think the Whoopass is it.
I only had 2 options. The KMX and some **** in a pretty blue and silver can. I almost went with the pretty can but I figured that they didn't need a pretty can if their product did what it said it was supposed to.
Here at work, the tools of choice are either Ripped Fuel or Xenadrine. They're diet pills that contain caffeine, Ephedrine, and Aspirin. Stay way away from the stuff in the late afternoon though...
