well, while inspecting my bearings earlier from last seasons engine, I noticed that on the main bearings they had some serious scratches on them. Also I noticed a bunch of metalic flake looking deposits stuck(melted) to the bearing. Now I cant tell if its dirt imbedded into the bearing material, or what could of caused the scratches. Is it possible that the machine shop let the tolerances be too loose causing metal flakes(breaking in process) to get in between the bearing and crank and melt or how could dirt (if thats what it is) be getting in there. I changed my oil reguraly and inspected it often. Also the downfall of the engine was when I spun rod number 4. Almost seems like oil starvation but how can I tell? Right now Im looking at a crappy haynes manuel about what my bearing symptoms might be but I am stuck between dirt imbedded into bearing material and overlay wipeout from oil starvation.

Sorry for the crappy pics, its the best I can do for now.

the specs near the lugs, look like copper deposits of some sort. Also on the backside of my rod bearings are kinda polished and swirly looking, so I am assuming that there is movement. What could cause movement in the rod bearings?? also did those main bearings really look that bad?
MAX_CFM, could some of that material on the bearings be from when I spun #4 rod bearings (eagle rods). But that still doesnt really explain why the specs look like copper. Should I be concerned with how that bearing looks?
ArinX, thanks for that bearing technology link for clevite. Very informative like you said.

them bearings look identical to a set i put in with a new used crank shaft. i was told it was caused by the oil hole in crank, that crank was worn??? that i needed to get it turned. i checked with some micromitors and all seemd round ???

these are some pictures of my rod bearings. sorry for the quality but I am using my webcam.
why does the back side of my bearings look like they are cross hatched and polished? The eagle rods look the same way as the back of the bearings. what could cause these bearing failures????????
