My best friend just traded his 98 GTP in on a 99 Lightning. His GTP was running a 13.8 and he says the Lightning feels alot faster. Too bad I'm stuck in Korea or I would have had a bunch of runs with it by now.

They are really fast, I raced one on the way to work once, very quick, I never had a chance.

I raced a brand new one. I was in the right lane at the stoplight and he was right behind me and there was a car on the left. By the end of first, he was already beside me. Into 2nd his tailgate was at the front of my car!! I shut it down after that. Very fast truck! I have AEM CAI, other than that, I'm stock. The guy was really cool though.

Raced the older model with the 360hp motor a few times at the strip. I ran a 14.7 to his 14.6. His best run was a 14.4.

I lined up against one at the strip piloting my friend's SiR.....

my 1st thought was....

"HAHAHAHha..what a PIECE OF ****....."

Then I saw the driver put on his helmet and I cacked myself.....

I ran a 14.77 in his SiR but let's just say the Lightning beat me by so much I watched his ET come up before I passed the finish line myself.....! HELLA fast man......HELLA FAST!

I am selling my Type R to get a Teal 1992 GMC Typhoon with 31,XXX miles... with AWD and 360lb ft of torque, it will keep up with a lightning for awhile anyway.. i think the lightning will win in the ¼ mile for sure though. My last typhoon ran a 13.9XXX at 97mph all stock except ATR stainless exhaust.

Ive always loved those Typhoon's. Not to keen on the Teal ones though. I like the original black. Or just white. Still, no matter the color its a bad *** truck.

Ya, I had a black one and sold it to get the "R", but I have lost every street race I have been in, and it is too noisy for my kids to talk to each other and me.... so back to the ty i go.... This teal one is the lowest priced, lowest mileage I could find and it doesn't have a roof rack which is another big plus.

I may **** around with a chip or a few mods to get it into the low 13's, but I haven't decided yet.

Scot

o ya... Typhoons, like lightnings are not great around turns for sure!

I love the old school typhoons. They were the ultimate sleepers and still are. AWD V6 turbo that smokes ricers with half-throttle. I would love to have either a typhoon or a syclone (low 13's stock for syclone!!!)... now, that's what I call fast trucks.

p.s. those don't know, don't mess with typhoons or syclones... we don't stand a chance unless we're heavily modded.

I was about the get black Lightning it was nice with 380hp and with chip for another couple hundred bucks it made 400-410hp. I've seen a new one and they handle was well as Mustang..so with a good driver they probably could keep up with an R in the twisties..enough so they could catch them in the straights and unless your good blocker you be fighting one all day long to keep it back behind you.
No one remember the Syclone? Hell maybe only rwd drive but it was hella lighter then the typhoon and carried the same or close to same engine and turbo setups.
I believed the Syclones out ran the Tyhoons atleast 3 yrs ago I heard of a Syclone whooping tail around some local drag strips against some typhoons.

Now a new Ford I was looking at is the new 6 speed SVT Ford Focus pumping out 170hp and 145lb torque out of it's inline 4. It's priced around 18-19 grand basically fully loaded here. Though this car is based off the RS Focus sold in Europe the Rallye Sport verison that uses Brembo braks, recaros and has 200hp instead of 170hp. Both Forcus weigh in at 2,750lbs.

Why not invest $3000 or so, and you will see high 13's. Will a well powered car with handling capability satisfy you? Of course, you will have to try even harder of tuning to see low 13's. But...hey, you can be fast straight and around! You can never mod a SUV amateurely to go fast while using a steering wheel.
As for the kids, that will have no solutions. I would trade the R for a WRX, not a SUV as WRX can handle better in off-road and snow. WRX is also a high 13' - low 14' car with lots of potential. More fun to tune then simply chipping a SUV.

i raced what appeared to be a brand new lightning one the highway a few months back... its surprsing how strong the top end is on those suckers... i did drag him around and he was a gracious loser giving me the thumbs up after passing him (he got the jump)

this was back when i was only running about 7lbs (around 270whp) at that time...

there is no way a stock R or even one with a few regular mods would be able to sort of hang with one...

unless you are dynoing at about 220+ whp i dont think there would be a chance

Well according to the sale people the Lightning are not ment to even go off road as they don't carry heavy duty rear ends for heavy towing either. There basically ment for the streets.
