well when im doing this **** for other people i could probably doing something just as productive to my own car.

what would you charge...say...to make just a normal box. take like an hour?
just a normal sealed or ported rectangle enclosure out of mdf.

i usually charge half what we would charge at the shop i work at, or feel the customer out and see what they are willing to spend. price also depends on how close of a friend the person is too.

When I charge for a box, it depends on how I feel at the time. I feel I am always fair with my prices though, for the performance provided.

I do it as more of a hobby than a way to make money though.

Personally I don't know what the cost of materials is for glassing. If it is anything like box building then the materials are fairly cheap, but it is labor intensive. I think 50-75% of what they would pay at a shop would be a fair rate.

BTW, try building a slot ported box in 1 hour It will probably take all day. Sealed boxes are boring.

well it doesnt take me too long to build ported boxes, it takes a while to draw them out perfectly and figure the cuts. then after that its just cut and paste pretty much.

but i usually just do round ports. im not that great at slot ports yet. i need some help with that i still dont understand how to tune the port.

well i guess ill call a shop or 2 and get their prices for some stuff. then like cut that in half to charge people.
=thanks

i was in the same boat as you. i would do custom trunks for nothing, just because i liked doing the work. over time more and more people started asking me for custom work to be done. at first it was cool, but it became time consuming. it started taking up alot of my free time, so i decided to start making money for my work. a friend of mine works at at stereo shop and they charge close to 1000 for the same kind of work ive been doing for free.

anyways... after he told me how much they charge, i set my prices between 350-500 depending on how much work is involved. if im working for a friend i just ask what they think the work is worth. sometimes i just ask for tools i need. hope this helps.

car toys, tweeters, and big name shops like those w/ certified installers charge anywhere frm 80.00-140.00 an hour for fiberglass. It really depends on how labor intensive the glassing is gonna be.

I've been thinking about starting to build boxed when I get a table saw (it's a struggle between buying that and wanting more power for my little Y8...the saw I want is around $2K) Is there a good site for figuring volume and basics to getting started. I've done a lot of carpentry work and just finished my first piece of furniture (w/ mortise & tenon joinery) I think I am up for speaker boxes.

Volume is based on each particular sub and can usually be found in the owners manual or on the manufacturers web site.

What kind of table saw are you getting?

Yeah, it's a lot of money. I will probably have to take out a small business loan to buy all of the tools at one time...

For what its worth here is what one of the local shops here charges
450 pair of kicks
550 door pods
650 wheel well enclosure
500 per day for fiberglass that needs to be painted and will be visible.

I subtract 150 from each of their prices and that is what I charge, but I also do this professionally.
