Default Home made oil catch can (with pics).

Thought I'd share with everyone my home made oil catch can.

1. Take a perfectly good SS mug (coffee cup I found at a local store).

2. Silver solder (causes welding would have punch a hole through it) SS fitting onto it. Putting a baffle in it would be a good idea. I sand blasted it to make it pretty.

3. Find a thin sheet of SS plate and solder it to the opening of the cup. You'll also need to get some clear tubing for the sight glass.

4. Solder on a mounting bar and install the clear tubing. Viola...the finished product.

All I have to do now is mount it somewhere in my engine bay...which will involve making 2 holes onto the mounting bar and trimming the excess bar off (the mounting bar was made extra long cause I have not decided where to moung it yet...likely on the rad support).

Comments?

VERY COOL!!! I would like to try something like that..have a TIG..make the welding a little easier..where did you get the fittings?

The fitting are SWAGELOK...SS tubing and SS farrows. I got them from work

TIG might of worked as well. The mug was double walled with very thin walls.

looks good except:

might have been easier to use the cup right side up, instead of upside down.... bracket could have been built into the lid then. doesn't matter tho, unless it leaks..

also, i'm not sure what you're baffle is for... for an oil/water/vapor separator, the baffles should be horizontal (with holes in them) so the hot vapors have something to condense on (like a distillation or liquid/liquid extraction column). maybe it doesn't make much difference...

how'd you 'weld' this chit? "silver solder".. and a soldering iron????

Well, I kinda thought of stuff as I went along. I didn't come up with a way to mount it till I was finished, probably would have been better to have it right side up.

The baffle is to separate the inlet and outlet nipples...otherwise it would have been an almost direct path...it is just there to ensure that no oil blows directly out of the can. I made the baffle that way cause it made installing it alot easier than if it were flat.

Silver solder and a propane torch. Silver solder is strong chit.
