h23 snapped rod - crank and tranny ?s
I snapped a rod and cracked the block on my h23a. I was on the highway doing about 85mph so my rpms were around 4200-4400. When it blew I didnt think quick enough to put the car in neutral, too worried about getting off the road. I dont know if it would have even mattered anyway, but Im thinking that the tranny would have kept the engine spinning since it was in gear. If it did keep spinning Im guessing that the crank is probibly shot since the snapped rod would have gotten caught or caused some kind of major stress on the crank.
So would the engine have kept spinning?
What if the rod was jammed into the cylinder wall keeping the motor from spinning, could there be damage to the tranny?
Also, is there any chance the crank is ok? I have heard different things about regrinding a honda crank, is it possible/ safe/ worth it?
Basically whats shot and what might be ok? If there is a chance that the crank is ok, Ill have it checked out, but I dont have the cash to waste if the chances are slim to none. How about the auto tranny, is there anything that could be messed up?
Sorry for the rambeling and if this doesnt make much sense. Im just really frusterated and tired of being poor and having a busted car.

I don't know if it would have made much of a difference... I think that once the rod snapped that's what caused the damage. I wouldn't be hard on yourself thinking that if you did that it might be okay... I wouldn't waste my time trying to save any parts of it. I bet the tranny is okay...
Check out http://www.car-parts.com it will let you search local junk yards that might have a block. Maybe you could get a deal on one.
If I was in your shoes I would do 2 upgrades while you have to. I would drop a H22 in there along with convert the car to a 5 speed. It will cost you more but if you have to replace it anyway why not spend a little more to get a lot more. That's just my opinion. You might be able to add the cost of a new motor to your Loan if you have one if not you might look into getting some sort of a loan to do it.
Sorry about it BTW. Sucks
I know how it can be to be stuck like that. Good luck!

Well consider the motor gone. The rod snapped and ate most everything around it.
The tranny will be fine; yes, it still spun the motor b/c it was in gear, but it wouldn't hurt the tranny.
You either gotta find an H23 block (you can reuse the old head, it should be fine) or upgrade to an H22.
OR do what I did when my H23 blew and take the crank, buy a high mileage H22, and make an H23 VTEC.....only if you're technically inclined.
