Default Glowing turbo manifold? is this normal?

Ok, Is it normal for the turbo manifold to glow, I can only see it when I pull over immediatly and its fairly dark. I'm running a drag turbo kit on my Integra B18B, I have a EGT guage, and the temp. probe is about 8-10 inches from the top of the down pipe( I know it should be closer, is that a huge deal?). I'm getting up to 1200 F. cruising down the highway, and 900-1000 F around town. My cam timing and ignition timing is set perfect( Stock ). I'm not running any boost, because I'm waiting for Hondata to arrive, so Its not because I'm pushing it hard. My spark plugs show that the fuel mixture is pretty good and fuel efficientcy is normal, my car is set up and driven like a stock integra for the time being. I just want to know if this is normal, and if so, cool. If not give me some Ideas, and any other ideas you might have...

Thanks Justin

yes, its normal... you tend to notice it after you quickly pull to the side after a few runs and its dark outside ...

SS manifold, like the max rev, etc. seem to heat up easily and glow often. I know I thought the same thing when i had mine. I pulled over on a cold night and saw red glowing under the hood and thought WTF. Dont worry though, usually it's from a poorly designed manifold or hard running.

It can be from running too rich also. I did an RX7 Turbo II motor swap (stock for stock) the o2 sensor wire had broken inside the harness and it was making the manifold and turbo glow bright red even with the WG open all the time. Fixed the wire and it no longer ran pig rich or glowed...until the WG was put back a few weeks later

yes your egt gauge shoulda been closer.. on my b18c1 (egt gauge about 6 inches from motor) before i installed the turbo the egt would get up to 1450*F.. just installed my turbo so i havent hit it hard yet to see an increase in EGT, though ive heard EGT on turbo cars get way hotter than others...

btw heres a vid of an an evo on a dyno: http://www.thugbuilder.net/fil...d.wmv
now THATS a hot manifold

Won't a glowing manifold cause a huge fire hazard? Also for those of you who are running a cat. converter, won't the high temperatures cause the cat to melt and clogged?

It should actually be 3" from the motor. On the #3 cylinder.

Very nice... funny though, my remote engine test facility looks nothing like that Man I could watch those injectors all day - very fascinating.

Thanks for everyones input, I guess everythings fine, I'm having a custom 3 inch down pipe made, and I'll properly position my EGT probe up at the top. I have a cast iron manifold and I dont want to drill, and tap it into that. What is every ones opinion on Thermal wrap on the manifold or down pipe, I know it makes a big difference on under the hood heat, but does it have any down sides?

Thanks again for all the responses,
Justin

Cast iron glows MUCH easier than welded tubing...at least from my experience.
you should have seen the stock SRT4 manifold/turbo. No wonder they use 3 heat shields!
