Type-R / 04 GTO Initial Impression
Don't know if anybody remembers me - My 00-0074R was stolen about 14 months ago. I now have an 04 GTO A4 (My first automatic). The car is very fast. But, because I'm used to hearing the engine rev to 8600, I "think" the car isn't accelerating fast enough. The GTO A4 redlines at 6K. So, from a hearing perspective, you seem to imagine the car is slow. I'm used to the fast reving, quick shifting Type-R. The 4 speed auto takes longer in each gear. Because the car is 1000 pounds heavier, you can't feel the speed. But, I look down when the car is shifting to 3rd at 80+ MPH, and think, how come I don't know I'm going this fast!!! My point is, that the Type-R provides killer driver feedback for the money. The GTO has outstanding power and handling.
Don't know if this post belongs here, but I thought you may be interested. Going to a 350HP low reving LS1 engine doesn't equate to more satisfaction. Enjoy your rides!!

You opted for the A4 instead of the M6? I think I hear Baby Jesus crying in the background.
Good choice on the car overall. I still want to check one out when the weather gets warmer.

Glad to hear a first-hand impression of the GTO. I saw one in person at the Raleigh Auto Expo, and aside from the big honkin' V8 and the nice-looking 6-speed, I was disappointed in the look of it
The new Caddys were much nicer to look at, IMO. Of course, they cost considerably more...
What are the GTO's going for?

904 cubic inches!!!!!
Would you even need a multi speed tranny with that thing? Just give it one gear thats good for about 200mph, torque would handle the rest.

They offer a six-speed but it is a $1,000 option (I think). I just recently driven a GTO. Compared to the DC2/4 it was a lot more comfortable. The steering feel is numb compared to an Integra. It handles pretty good and it has plenty of power to spare
. I dont care too much about the seats and the interior (which I dont like anyway). To me it felt more like a highway cruiser than a sporty car

Built here in OZ! But we call it the Monaro. Auto is a good choice I think, the manual gear change is a bit slow and baulky and V8 doesn't really need that much rowing between gears anyhow.
The GTO comes standard with the automatic transmission. The manual costs an extra $675-$700. However, if you get the automatic, you have to pay $1000 gas guzzler tax (so it actually costs more). The manual gets by because it gets around 29 on the highway. The auto gets around 22. I paid GMS pricing (GM employee discount) minus $250 = $29,900. Pretty good deal!!!
I got the automatic so my wife doesn't get car sick. She can't take the jerky motion associated with a manual. And, she can drive it, so she tells me. The first time she got behind the wheel, she got scared of the exhaust sound and chickened out.
For you guys that don't care for the body style, I say to each their own. It was a selling point to me (looks like a big grand am rental car). Nobody will notice it. It blends in with the crowd. And, hopefully it won't get stolen, like the Type-R!!! I'm not looking at it while driving and having a blast.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that it was an ugly car, just that I wish it looked more like the Holden.
Enjoy that thing called torque

I'd like to see how you like it 3 years from now...personally, I'm not a fan of American car reliability. It would be VERY hard for me to from a Honda to a Pontiac. It is nice to have LS1 power...

That's a myth left over from the 80's domestic vehicles. I have 116,000miles on my car and it has NEVER left me stranded. And I rag the sh*t out of it.
I love the new Monaro CV8 errr.....GTO but I'd have bought the 6spd definetly. Dude, your wife sounds like a wimp lol I'm sorry, no offense intended, but come on....getting scared of an exhaust sound?

My Ford Taurus was a damn POS. It gave me something to do every month, fix it...

She's used to driving children around - Day Care Business. She's overly cautious when driving. How would you like sitting at a stop sign preparing to make a left while waiting for cars that are a block and a half away!!! If I would have bought the manual, I would be riding around in her SUV most of the time. I MUST drive!! So, it's an automatic. For 30 years, I've driven nothing but manual. It's definately a change.
By the way, she grew up off Jamaca Ave in Queens. Lots of wimps there, so I hear!! Just didn't start driving at the same time as the rest of us.

i got to see one up close.. didn't like leather.. other than that the car is pimping compared to camaros/firebirds. much better looking in my opinion.. and its not all the big.. from what i heard the car is imported from australia. so its not really a traditional pontiac. maybe thats why i like it.
