Preparing the ITR Project for painting.
The shell is currently Red, and i'm planning on painting it .Satin Silver. How hard is to do the sanding and applying primer and sealer? I was quoted $1700 for a complete color change, but I cannot spend more than $700 on the paint.

Then you will get a $700 paint job and it will look like chit.
Put the money into fixing whatever dings or scratches the car already has.

Well, the prep work is by far the most important part. The paint itself is the easiest and not all that much work.
However, a color change for $1700 is cheap, and I'm not sure I'd want a 1700 color change...
but for just spraying the same color over existing paint.. you can get that for 700 easily.

If somebody is going to post another response like this. Save it. I don't need it.

The $1700 includes everything (sanding, priming, etc) but it doesnt include the inside of the car. So is useless.
What I want to do is the most pre-work I can by myself to help reduce the cost of the paint job. Anybody has any experience in paint jobs?

It only includes exterior, engine bay and door jams. Nothing more.

sanding is easy but labor intensive.. do you have a sprayer to apply the primer? ever painted anything with a compressed air sprayer before? if not, now is not the time to learn(unless you're really not in any hurry and can spend time re-sanding and respraying when you screw up).. you'll also need a place to do all this painting in..
EDIT: as a matter of fact, if you're going this far, you might as well paint the damn thing yourself.. it will probably not end up any worse than the $1700 paint job you'll get..
what everyone is trying to say is that $1700 is too cheap for this caliber of a paint job. If you want it done right and well, save your pennies and wait til you can afford it.. or ignore the paint and spend that $1700 on some other part of the car..

for everything? and done right? I'd say at least $3000.. If you do the prep work yourself, and properly(at least the sanding), then $2000-2500.. could be more depending on how reputable shops are in your area though..
