Default JDM Final Drive Installed, TRANNY TECH NEEDED *UPDATED AND FIXED*

Okay just installed the JDM Final Drive, Went for the first start up and TROUBLE!!...
Okay when I start the car (clutch pressed in) and I let out the clutch (in neutral) it automatically kills my motor. AND when I put it in 1st,2nd,3rd,4th, or 5th gear and let out the clutch, it makes a weird scratching sound at first, then kills the motor once fully released. AND another thing is that it WONT go into Reverse AT ALL!!

If any of you tranny TECH peeps can give me an idea of what may be the problem, this would be VERY appreciated.

*UPDATE* FIXED and Feeling GOOD!

did you only install the final drive ( ring gear) ?

you will also need the counter shaft, first gear, distance collar, and first gear bearings

sorry to hear that....I had a similar problem installing the clutch and fly and had to drop the tranny again. Lots of work if working alone

Sounds like the tranny is bound up. When it was out of the car, could you rotate the input shaft by hand? You should be able to do this fairly easily, in nuetral and in every gear. Check this before and after tightening the housing bolts. If you cannot, you probably messed up somewhere during reassembly.

The total length of the mainshaft from input end flange to the top of the seated inner race of the end ball bearing is important. If it is slightly too long, when the casing is torqued down it will bind up. You may find everything rotates good until you tighten the case down. Go thru each piece and make sure they are oriented correctly.

In particular, some of the synchro ring sets look identical, but have slightly different thicknesses of teeth/stop pegs. The 5-R pair is easy to mix up. Not too say that it couln't be on the cshaft though.... Look at the service manual carefully, reassemble everything, and you should be okay.

But next time make sure you check that the tranny is not bound up BEFORE you put it back on the car.

Ask me how I know.

Special note: on the countershaft there are two friction dampers. They have three teeth or pegs (I don't know what to call them) that fit into holes in two of the gears. If you don't line those pegs up with the holes, the countershaft gears will bind, due to a lack of clearance.

hey thanks for all the replies guys, We plan on tearing it apart again tomorrow. I read up on this manual that my cousin has and got some info from a H-T member. The main shaft didn't spin by hand once that casing was ALL the way on. We figured that might be a problem but wasnt too sure....thanks again

.....just got done with the jdm final in a tranny install tonight.

Thankfully I didn't have to mess with the internals - just dropped it and then buttoned her back up after the final was in.

Luckily, there wasn't any binding.....

I feel your pain though, man.

how'd you install without messing with the internals??>. or did you mean that you PERSONALLY didn't have to mess with internals?.. so your roll was the following?
drop tranny
sit back and enjoy beer
reinstall tranny that has new FD

depends on how adventurous you are.

you will need a 32mm socket/a big puller/along with all of the normal tools.

Make sure its a 3 prong puller and the 2 prongs are a bitch. Plust you'll need some tubes/pipe to press/hammer the gears back on the counter shaft.

Hey guys, GOOD NEWS!! After it was all put together, we tore into it again and had the tranny out and sitting on the ground in like 45 minutes. We tore it apart and found out one of the MAIN problems. When the Nut was tightened on the Countershaft, It had binded all the gears together. Thats why it would kill my motor when it was in neutral as soon as i would let the clutch out, same as for every gear. So to fix that we used a feeler gauge and such.

But i took it for a few rides, and it feels AWESOME, especially with the lightened flywheel and good clutch....thanks for the replies and everything. Its always good to know H-T will be there

That's what happens when the friction damper tangs are not aligned properly. Glad to hear that you got it sorted out.

Correct, minus the beer part.....

Sorry, no driving impressions from me - it wasn't my tranny this time around.

I already have the ATS 4.9 in my itr and love it.
