Name that sound...Problem..whatever you wanna call it! vidclip inside 4mb
Ok, so after a whole week finaly replaced my broken a6 with a new a6. Well, a 70k a6. First time engine swapping you could say (helped with a ford but that doesn't count).
Anyway, everything is all hooked up, ready to go...But no start. Turns over and pops...I think the popping noise is actually more of an exhaust leak that I already know about. Sounds like it's not firing.
here's the vid-sound clip... I killed the link cuz i needed the webspaceIt's a very dark video, not much lighting I guess, but you can hear the sound. It is turning over, the timing belt is a tiny bit loose. I put it in gear and tried to turn the crank by turning a tire, but nothing happened at all, don't know if there's something with the clutch? It sounds like the starter is working ok, just not firing at all?
So you got any ideas? I want my car back it's been down since Dec 14th (getting hit by a car while driving a snowmobile didn't help me for a month or so either..)
Thanks in advance!

How's a good way to check that in car? With the head on? I have an aem cam gear and when I put the head on everything was at tdc including the cam and gear. I don't think it's jumping, it's a little loose but not extremely, like tiny bit of play, so I know I need to tighten it anyway, just a bitch to do in the car, lol.
Thanks for the thought, I'll definately give that a shot when I get in the garage again (probably tomorrow afternoon).
Any other ideas anyone?

timing is way off. it`s like 180 out or so . it`s not hard to check and reset it . take valve cover off , then line up your crank pulley on the white dot on the crank where the pointer is , then loosen the 14 mm tensioner bolt and pull the timing belt off. then make sure the cam gear is aiming at the right notch on the cover . slide belt back on and turn the crank pulley little less than 1/4 turn counterclockwise and tighten up the tensioner bolt . should be plenty tight .
thanks for the help, those are almost the exact words of a friend who's in fl for a week, 180 out, haha. Will definately check that out tomorrow. Funny thing, when I put the head on I thought I had it wrong, so I took it back off and re-did it all at TDC...Guess the cam gear musta been put on upside down so the TDC marks were wrong, shoulda left it alone after the first time, haha. Will definately do the timing again tomorrow. Thanks for the help! Can't wait to drive her again!

Yeah, probably the only smart thing since I've done since I started the swap. checkout my car-domain of my altezza bearing crx at http://members.cardomain.com/tiggscrx and check out page 4 for a little of the troubles we've had. Today (sunday) marks day 8 of a supposed to be easy install!

yup sounds like its 180 off, did you ever try and put your hand over the tb opening and see if you got pressure coming out ?
nah, haven't been back to the garage yet. Too much snow today to bother, I'll just go tomorrow.
I'll try that out just to see as well. I'm thinking the person who built the head put the cam gear on wrong so the markings on that were off as well so it made me put the timing wrong. I'll definately give it a good 180 spin and see what's up. thanks a ton.

simple way to see if its 180 out. pull the #1 plug, the one by the timing belt put something long and clean into it. see if it goes down further thant the deck surface. if it does you got it 180 out. I know the D15 dizzy will go on 180 out also the D16 I assume will too. may be nothing more than that . If #1 piston is up when the timing mark on the crank is at TDC and the Cam pully lines up pull cap to see what cylinger rotor is pointing towards.
