theres no need really...if it rattles then take it off...it just prevents bags and such from getting stuck onto into and burning while driving....

Yeah you can take that off...when i got my cat done after a few weeks it started to rattle, that was sooo annoying. I went back to the shop where i got it done and he said its ok to take it off so he did. No more rattles
...all he said was not to drive in tall grass

my heat shield next to the cat was rattling too. the one thats right above the b.pipe. i just found out the exact spot the rattling was coming from (a sensor bung, o2?) and trimmed the heat shield a bit (more like clipped a part of it off) so that it would not rattle against that bung anymore. i'll see if i can find pics from helm's.

this was the fix for mine: the green highlight was the o2 sensor that my heat shield was rattling against. the red highlight is the portion of the heat shield that i trimmed off (its thin aluminum .. so find like some strong clippers). i would make sure that its this part thats rattling before doing this though just so you don't waste efforts.
I just got a '95 4dr gsr that rattles like this right around 3000-3500rpm. Previous owner said his mechanic told him that it was the heat shield and that it would need to be welded. People I've talked to have said "take that **** off" or "don't take it off unless you want to melt something". What's this heat shield (same as in the pic, I think) actually shielding?
the catalytic converter has the shield on top and bottom. the b-pipe just has it on top. the top shield is reducing the amount of heat that makes it into the cabin. the lower one more or less prevents plastic from melting on to the cat (i've had that happen before on my previous car) while also aiding in cooling the cat (not that its ever cool...)
if you remove your cat heatshield you could start a fire, the bottom one is to prevent leaves, and ***** from catching on fire when you drive or park youir car over them, the top one prevents the heat from going inside the car,
your cat gets verry hot, if you look at them under a load they somethimes glow red hot and will burn anything near it. leave your heatshields on, bend them if you have to.

One time I parked in some 2-ft tall grass in late summer, with no heatshields whatsoever, nothing happened.
I do plan on rigging up some welded nuts or something to attach my OEM heatshield to whatever header I end up getting, if it's not the JDM one.
