Default New Daily Driver/Tow vehicle for the ITR

Ive been thinking about getting something nice to daily drive for a while now. The 240 is a blast, but far from nice and practical . My girl has been on my *** becuase we only have small sporty cars and nothing practical and everything sucks in the snow. So since i was thinking of a tow vehicle for the R anyhow i took the plunge and got a 97 Explorer XLT. Its mint in and out, and has every option avail other than leather. Its got the 4.0l V6, sohc. I did some research and the seemed to be one of the most stout motors avail for the explorer. It says it has 5000lb towing capacity, but i guess we'll see how it does when i get to try it out. I was looking at getting a Dolly, but its a pain to get the car on and off soi might just get an open trailor. But heres some pics of it. I was supposed to pick it up last night, but now i have to wait until next week until my deposit clears the banks.

What you guys think . Kinda dirty cuz it rained, but youll get the idea

lol, i actually said i wasnt ever buying a black vehicle ever again, but im getting steal on this i couldnt pass it up. He wanted $5495 for it, but i got it for $5195, and he put new emissions and inspection stickers on it.

IM really curious to see how it tows.

Nick , Kim was driving it the other day like it was a racecar, shes nailing it in corners.i was scared it was gonna tip, but she said she had to test its limits.lol. i taught her well .

Better make sure it has a class IV hitch and a transmission cooler on it, or else you won't get too far. IIRC, those explorer trannys really needed the tranny cooler.

my cousin had one to tow his big block camero, it was a little shakey at highway speeds but it was a full trailer with a car that weighed in about 1000lbs than yours, you should be fine. but like posted above, id get a tranny cooler, and maybe a rollcage.

i wouldn't want to do too much towing with that. i have a 2000lb miata that i wouldn't want to tow with anything less than a V8. if you're not going to use it much for towing, and won't be going far, then it'll probably be just fine. but if you're going more than a 150 miles or so, you'll see what i mean.

well it was a toss up either this or a grand cherokee v6. i know plenty of people who tow with those with no probs and they have the same capacity.
Imean i got it for multiple reasons.I was hoping towing could be one of them. i guess ill see how it does

The rear suspension will need a bit of help, try to get stiffer springs/shocks for the Explorer.
I had a 94 Explorer LTD and it had the tow package but stiff suffered from a soft rear suspension.
Also to gain a few Hp out of the 4.0 motor Get the Flowmaster catback exhaust sytem for it, I did it for mine and the truck would chirp into 2nd gear . It was cheap under 200 way back when. I got it thru Jegs...

Good luck.

thanks for the advice. My girl dont want me touching it at all , but i think we all know wats gonna happen , lol/.
i was looking at the flowmaster already thru Summit, it was only like $130 or so for the cat back i believe it was.
Did you tow with yours?
i was trying to look for the chip set ups for the ecu too, but no luck yet.

You should order a full set of "Integra Type R" decals.

We use to tow a heavy-*** 19' speed boat with our 92+94 XLTs. Towed the boat fine at 65mph even without having trailer brakes. Sold the 92 but the 94 is still running strong.

Good Luck.

Well **** happened and the deal fell thru on the Black one , we had a lack of communcation and he got confused and thought i didnt want it anymore and sold it on me. I bitched and complained and made a big fuss and ended up getting upgraded version at a huge discount.
He knocked off $1000 off another Explorer for me to appease me .
So i paid in full for this one and is a done deal. Ill get pics when the snow clears up , got it just in time , lol .

Anyway this one is a 98 XLT fully loaded. Extra options this one had that the other didnt was leather, power captains chairs, upgraded tow package with the better shocks and tranny cooler, cassette and cd player and changer. other than that this one is white with the i think like gold accents. Looks pretty dope. Motor is the same , but this one seems peppier for some reason .
