Default How to drop motor from underneath safely...anyone done this before?

hi i have a lil 89 crx hf and i'm wanting to take out this lil D15 to replace it with an si motor from a crx but i don't have access to a engine hoist and was wondering if anyone has ever just lowered it from the car to remove it instead of pulling it out with a hoist? can you give some advice and maybe a little how to because this would be my first swap but it seems pretty straight forward and the hardest job so far that i've done to a car was axles and that was a piece O cake. ok thanks guys

also, remember to use the term FAQ when searching. all the good tech threads have the term FAQ in the title.

I am pretty sure I removed the crossmember b/c I had to. I don't think the motor will clear the crossmember when dropping it down.

As long as whatever you are dropping the motor onto is high enough, the car won't have to go as low. If I rebuild the "engine holder", I'll probably raise it up some so the car doesn't have to drop so low.

The only problem with that is the car has to be raised higher for the engine to be pulled out from under the car.

You could do it this way, or simply man-handle it over the car if the jack you have sucks big *****. Been there before Try to line up motor mount holding the motor up with tie-down straps.

I drop all my motors from the bottom. (It helps to have a lift too... )

Just dropped it last weekend... very easy. Just make sure you get your car jacked high enough. And that you have at least 2 other friends to help!

old headliner?

if you put the jacks under it right, you can use them to lower the engine out of the car and set it on it's oil pan, then drag it out.

i dropped my motor from the bottom without removing the crossmember. it would probably be easier to get out if you did so but i had a few friends. my jack didn't extend high enough so we actually just picked the front end of the car and rolled it over the engine. not too bad.

Do more people prefer to bring it out / slide it in through the bottom. I know Honda does it this way, but is because they have the entire front end in one piece. Its fairly quick to pull a motor out the top, and I've never had to take any of the suspension components off

if i had a hoist at the time i would have done it from the top. overall coming from the top should be alot easier.

hmmm how was the rolling it out over the car? i got a 89 crx hf that weighs in at around 1850lbs or something like that so i'm not sure if the front end would be easy to lift with a couple friends or not? so you kept the rear tires on for the rear? cause the link i clicked above, the guy had the rear on bricks so the car would be low enough but maybe it might be easier to just pick up the front end with friends?

yeah we kept the back tires on the car and used them as a pivot and rolled it back. you could also just get someone to pull the motor out from under the car while the motor is on a board or something. hell, just grab it by the distributor, you wont need it hah. it took me and my uncle (both at 200lbs to pick the car front end up and roll it back) and believe me the hf is known for its light weight, but its still damn heavy for two people to pick up. overall im glad we did it that way, but if we had a hoist it would have been a piece of cake.
