I have a few tech questions
I have a few questions about engines in general.
What is a "breather"?
What is a "vtec solenoid"?
What are the benefits of an aftermarket fuel rail (does it only make a difference on a modded motor?)
and i was also arguing with a friend who said Iridium spark plugs give 5hp gain.
I highly doubt this but do they make a difference in hp?
and last but not least, does an aftermarket ignition system improve hp as well?
i guess i sound like a n00b but i would like to know these things. Thanks

People use "breathers" off of their valve covers because they are afraid that the oily vapor coming out of the valve cover that would normally be sucked out into the intake will mess up their air fuel ratio and cause them to detonate.
VTEC Solenoid is a device that teh ECU gives 12volts to activate using the VTEC grind on the cam.
Aftermarket fuel rails allow you to flow more volume, if you don't have a need for more fuel and are using stock fuel pressure and stock injectors you will not see any gains.
I believe Iridium is only used for corrosion resistance. They would be great plugs to use if you dont plan on changing them for 100k miles.
After market ignition systems can give you a stronger spark that otherwise could be blown out by turbo apps. Some also fire multiple times to give you a more complete burn giving you more power. A lot of aftermarket ignition systems have other built in features like multiple rev limiters that can be used for launching the car at a certain rpm.
