This is on my '97 Civic HX. It developed a whirring noise.

It whirrs when the engine is pulling in 1st and 2nd gear - less noticeably in higher gears, probably because it's being masked by road noise. It doesn't whir when engine braking. It doesn't whir in neutral.

It also whirs when I release the clutch pedal, only while I am slipping the clutch and the revs are climbing, and it stops whirring once the revs are matched. Picture this: Downhill, 4000 RPM, 1st or 2nd gear. Step on clutch, allow revs to drop, do not change gear. Release clutch slowly. When it begins to grab, revs climb. While I am slipping the clutch and the revs are climbing, it whirrs. Once the revs are matched and the RPM stops climbing, no more whirring.

Ideas? Clutch release bearing? Throwout bearing? Tranny? I put in Redline tranny oil 15k miles ago.

its your inputshaft bearing replace it before you have to replace the whole tranny

 

Thanks. Have you had this problem before? Is this a known trouble spot?

Are my peculiar symptoms spot-on for this? (whirs under power but not when engine braking, unless I am slipping the clutch while engine braking and bringing RPMs up)

Can this bearing be replaced without pulling the tranny? After pulling the tranny (which I might do myself if possible), how many hours labor in a tranny shop will it cost to replace just that bearing?

The ISB will get chewed up and thrown all over the tranny...destroying it and locking it up. Tom (B18C5-EH2) said he drove around for a few months on a bad one and he was locked out of gears (destroyed tranny).

 

i replaced my whole clutch...and tat solved tat whinning noise...my clutch needed to be replace thouigh...from a b16a2

i 3rd this. i have had 2 trannies go bad due to this and that is what it sounds like to me. even though you said those symptoms aren't what your having i did have a whirring noise in my other 2 trannies. it stopped when i pushed the clutch in but as soon as i started to let it out it started. trust me, drain your tranny fluid and see what it looks like

I'm going to have to go with output shaft bearing. If it were the input shaft, the sound would occur in every gear because the input shaft spins at engine speed, which goes through the same RPM in every gear. The output shaft bearing could make noise in 1st and 2nd because those are the gears that he is in when the output shaft's speed is such that the bearing is aggrivated. I had a bad input shaft bearing on a D series transmission and it made noise in every gear.

Just a thought.

 

Don't think its the countershaft bearing. Countershaft bearing RARELY fails, and if it did it would fail in a big way. The countershaft bearing is a completely different type of bearing, with rollers around the sides:

Look at all the bearings in the tranny tho:


To the thread starter, your best bet is to rip the tranny open. Inspect ALL of the bearings and make sure they dont click/make a noise when you spin them, and make sure the countershaft bearing isnt backed out of the case like mine was. Good luck

 

i think I have the same problem!!! Looks like I will be driving my CX tranny for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Its a $20 bearing and a 20 minute fix once you get the tranny off the car. Fess up and do it

You're probably right

 

I took a sample of tranny oil. It's a bit dark and frothy at the top of the bottle, but it didn't smell burned, and there were no obvious metal flakes. I even looked at it under our microscope at work. The oil is Redline, 15k miles old.


I checked carefully, and the whirring is RPM related. The whir doesn't change pitch but the whir frequency changes:

At 1000 rpm pulling the car, it goes whir----whir----whir.

As I speed up it goes whir----whir---whir--whir-whirwhirwhwhrrrrrr

At around 2000 rpm is where the individual "whirs" blend into one another.

The thing reminds me of a Hammond organ with the tromolo(?) going.

If I do the downhill - step on clutch - let revs drop - release the clutch slightly thing, the whirring frequency is related to what the RPM would be if the clutch was completely engaged and not the actual RPM - i.e. if 20 mph were 2000 rpm in 2nd gear, and I go downhill at 20 mph, it's in 2nd, and I release the clutch pedal slowly, and the engine is at 1500 rpm, it will whir at the 2000 rpm frequency and not the 1500 rpm whir.

This tends to suggest the frequency is related to the speed of the tranny input shaft, and not the speed of the crankshaft.

But why only under power, or when slipping the clutch while engine braking? Could the input shaft bearing make this noise?

 

I have the same problem. Would the flywheel have anything to do with this?

 

Easiest way to check for ISB is to listen to your engine idle and see if you hear a whirring noise, and then have a friend step on the clutch if the noise goes away then your ISB is dying

Given that I don't hear any noise in neutral while in the driver's seat, whether or not the clutch is in or out, would that rule out the ISB?
