no it does not kick in.. Engine has to be warmed up and it get a reading of the VSS vehicle speed sensor so only kick when your moving or on a dyno..

Well you might have to clean the vtec solonoid if it gets dirty and the cams wear out a little along with the valve trane. but vtec does not really wear out. its just the computer send a signal to lock the cams into higher lift for more air and fuel.

it won't "wear out" but the pins that lock the cams might get gunked up with black stuff (sorry for being so technical). you might want to take the cam follower assembly apart amd clean everything

Purchase a new gasket from Honda
Unbolt it, remove old gasket, hose that sucker down with carb cleaner.
Install new gasket
Bolt back on.

Not possible, the ECU will not allow it just as the ECU will not activate the solenoid when the wheels are not spinning or the car is warmed up.

I thinks its fun, and scary, popping v-tec in reverse.
Speaking of V-TEC, my vtec opens at 5100 and opens even harder at 5200. This has been happening since i got my skunk2 computer anyone ever heard of this. ITS WEIRD! Your the one that asked about spoon but had the crane right, and your from da ny streets where in ny, i know in my town youll get smoked wit that gay single. V-Tec is how i say it and until you could beat me you can agree or disagree.

No it does not. The engine must be at operating temperature and have the tires rolling.

Could you put it in neutral while doing 40 and then engage it? I never have tried.

There are no "pins that lock the cams."

It's the followers/rocker arms that get locked by the pins. There are three followers pers set of lobes, two followers on the small lobes of the cam and there is one follower on the big lobe and there are 4 sets of lobes. When vtec "kicks in" the vtec solenoid activates and uses oil pressure to move the "pins" and lock the vtec followers.

If the pins get gunked up with black stuff you have seriously neglected your engine. However, if your fairly mechanically inclined you could take the followers off and clean it all out. If you search you can find how to's for replacing cams and such. Those will show you how to remove the follower assembly.

Good Luck

i know this from experience. vtec is a min. oil pump, when you hita certain rpm the oil pressure pushes a pin to make your cams move over to use the larger lobes. yes it can get gunked up and stick or not engage at all. on the left hand side of the motor, right behind the distributer there is a small solenoid. take out the three bolts and replace the oil seal. clean out the pin w/ contact cleaner and put back. DONT LOSE ANY PARTS!

wow, learn something new every day.

it actually pushes the pin through the valve rockers binding the 3 lobes (2 low rpm, 1 high) together. it doesn't move the cam shaft over.

If you want to mess with your Vtec you can go buy an MSD rpm switch and hook it up to the solinoid. All it needs is a 12V source. Heck, you can put it on a 5 dollar switch...Not advisable, but possible.
