Clunking & Squeeking from rear suspension...need new bushings?
Well luckily i just recieved the master kit from ES so i will be replacing the bushings as soon as i can but i first wanted to make sure that there isn't anything else that could be giving me these symtoms...
When i go over bumps/potholes the rear suspension sounds like clunking, as if the wheels are loose or something (which i checked they are not
). This sound sometimes comes from the front as well.
If i go over a speed bumps or something bouncy the rear suspension creaks, which i'm almost positive is the rear bushings.
Is this the typical warning of bad bushings??? My struts and springs are brand new and everything is tight as well.
Thanks,
Vince

I had the same problem on my 92' DX HB, it was the bushings on the LCA's both bottom bushings for the shocks were shot! I am willing to bet the set will make your problem go away!
yeah i looked at the bushings and they are cracked but still in tact. What warrants new bushings? Would just cracks cause this problem?
Thanks!

If there are cracks then most likely they are drie-rotted. Could be the squeeking noise because its pretty much metal on metal now. But Its not a definate answer to your question. Maybe your struts too?
What about the trailing arm bushings do think it could be them? has any body changed them? I know ES doesnt make them anybody know who does?
yes ES makes trailing arm bushings...they are seperate from the master kit though...i think they are $27? something like that. I got the master kit and trailing arm for 147 shipped on HT.

Yes, it's your trailing arm bushings... I'd recommend the Mugen bushings. The trailing arm's motion is not straight around a single pivot point; it also twists. The solid polyurethane bushings limit this motion and will cause binding and snap oversteer. I went from stock bushings to filled bushings (DIY filled with polyurethane goo) and the rear end would kick sideways whenever I hit a bump due to the binding. I also found it very hard to control during autocross; the car was very hairy to drive at the limit and always wanted to swap ends. The Mugen bushings are worth it in this case because they have basically twice the rubber of the stock OEM ones but they won't bind like the solid polyurethane ones.
On the other hand, filling the rear suspension bushings will make your ride SO quiet to drive
And if you have DA rear suspension you have no choice but to do filled bushings as Mugen doesn't make a bushing for the DA suspension and I don't think it's available as OEM from Honda without buying the whole trailing arm.

I bought the ES kit for 88-91 crx but i was told my 88 has passive rear steering and is different. Will this kit still have everything i need? Also...could i just fill my stock (cracked) bushings instead of using the ES kit? if not where can i get a hold of the mugen rear trailing arm bushings...
How many bushings make up the rear trailing arm...just the one mounted to the body?
Sorry for all the Q's
Thanks,
Vince

I dunno all the answers to your questions... I've always had funky suspension setups consisting of parts from many different models of cars, so I never bothered to pick up any ES master kits because only 1/3 of them would work
AFAIK the ES trailing arm bushing should work in the '88 (I have an '88). Yes, you can fill your stock, cracked bushing - I've done that on my old '88 trailing arms, and on my new DA trailing arms because both times the rubber has been horribly cracked and torn. Filling the bushing isn't going to be as solid as the ES kit bushing; therefore I consider filling the bushing to be better than the ES bushing. It still causes binding, though, and binding is bad!
AFAIK Prothane... or Prodrive... can't remember... also makes a trailing arm bushing that is softer than the ES trailing arm bushing and it is supposed to work nicely. I believe Driven is using that bushing.
For the Mugen bushings, check out King Motorsports.

Yeah it just stinks because i dished out the money for the ES rear control arms...maybe i'll just try them, i dunno. I hate wasting money

Don't worry, it's not like they won't work, it just means that over sudden bumps + when driving at the limit your car will be tailhappy
