sohc zc problem
Just finished my grey plug zc swap into a 90 hf, and have no starter so naturally im bump starting it, my problem is when the engine is cold it takes a long time to bump start like 4-5 trys then when it starts it will want to die, when i hit the gas it the rpms dip and it is a struggle to keep it running, but when it warms up it fine and it bump starts easy any info would be great
get a new starter motor... or atleast get a rebuilt one.
the gear shaft must be old and crusty since it would start when ur engine is warm. just replace ur dang start motor... it doesnt cost much and you dont have to be bangin under your hood everytime

my main concern is why it runs so shitty and takes so long to start when cold,
when it sits overnite and is cold it takes forever to bump start it, and when it does start it bogs down when i give it gas, till it warms up

ok, so I guess it is more than just your start motor.
Work step by step.
First, change the start motor. It is located under the throttle body... it looks like 2 horizontal cylinders. You are in California... your cold nights dont compare with Canadian winters
and once i changed this start motor, my car starts up within 2 cranks everytime (day or night).
So that would cure your starting problem. However, it can also be as easy as changing your battery for a new one.
After you've cured your starting problem, try to find out what is wrong with ur car's bogging problem. Check ur ecu for any codes.
I have actually been through a horrible bogging problem with my sohc zc. I've tried everything from changing distributers to spark plug gaskets (i found oil on 2 of my spark plugs). It turns out that my piston rings were toast and ALOT of oil was gettin into the combustion chambers.
I hope your problem isn't as serious as this, but just check your ecu codes, check your oil levels (see if you lose a lot of oil per week, means ur burning oil).
Lets see what others have to say..
I know i didn't cover everything.
good luck man
