Default Drivetrain ratio's??

I was wondering what the differnce is in drivetrain ratio's for example...

1st 4.35

2nd 2.50

3rd 1.66

4th 1.23

5th 1.00

as opposed to

1st 3.067
2nd 1.957
3rd 1.429
4th 1.125
5th 0.914

which of these transmissions is better geared for highway driving?? how can you tell?? lower ratio = lower revs?? sorry i am just trying to figure out which transmission would give me lower revs at higher speeds on the highway which will in turn increase my gas mileage on long trips...thanks guys!!

Those #s look like gear ratios, not overall drivetrain(?) ratios.

They're only part of the picture. Lower # means lower rpm at the same speed, IF the final drive ratio and & tires are the same. If the final drive isn't the same, you multiply the gear ratio (what you listed) X the FD ratio to get the overall ratio.

Say your 5th gear is 0.914 : 1 and your final drive is 4.10 : 1 then you multiply to get 3.75. That means for every revolution of the wheels, your engine makes 3.75 revolutions. Do your own homework about different size tires...

wow, ok thanks...yeh those are gear ratio's...ok so that all makes sence, so having that information supplied for you on a website doesn't really help you at all in determining what RPM the car will be at at say 70 mph?? There is no real way to determine this unless you testdrive the car?

1) Some cars (kinda unusual) have a primary drive ratio.
2) Gear ratio.
3) Final drive ratio.
4) Tire size.

If you have all of this... you can do the math.
