NYC thieves caught today
(New York-AP) -- An on-duty city police sergeant who was saved by his bulletproof vest shot a stolen-car suspect dead on a Queens street corner. Three other suspects have been captured.
Sergeant John Asam was shot around 4:45 p-m yesterday at 126th Street and 35th Avenue in Flushing. He was wearing his bulletproof vest, which stopped the bullet about two and a half inches from his stomach.
Asam is at Booth Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Police say Asam and his partner, Officer Keith Volero, were patrolling in plain clothes when they observed a car driving slowly around a junkyard. They ran a check of the license plate, which came back showing the car as stolen.
After the officers finally got the car to stop, four people got out and started running.
Another person was hiding behind the car, and Asam told him to come out. The suspect came out with a gun, fired and hit the sergeant. Asam fired back, killing the suspect.
Police identified the dead gunman as 19-year-old Richard Hatcherof West Babylon. They said that he fired while crouching on the ground and that his bullet hit the bottom edge of Asam's vest.
The three arrested people are Long Island residents 15-year-old Gregory Mack of Bayshore; 21-year-old John Rogers of Deer Park; and 26-year-old Edwin Davilaof West Babylon. They are charged with attempted murder.
Asam has been on the job since 1985, and had been a sergeant since 1989. Kerik said Assam has earned 20 police medals.

Probably no connection to the junkyard. Just some random knuckleheads straying from the burbs into the city and getting smoked by the NYPD. Anyone stupid enough to roll around in a stolen car armed with an illegal firearm with the state of affairs in NYC right now, deserves to get shot. We've got police checkpoints and national guard all over and these fake gangsta pussies do this crap!
<------Oh yeah, that's the Bronx BTW...161st & River ave for those who dont know.
They should of stayed in Suffolk where they belonged, and not riding around endangering NYPD officers. Now the three surviving punks are gonna be washing other peoples boxer shorts on Rikers Island! Ha ha
They're gonna be somebody's bitch! No guns, beer, or tupac cd's in jail to act hard with. Just a bunch of hard-hittin convicts that are gonna make showgirls out of those boys.

I know how frustrating it can be to have a car violated. You work so damn long and these punk *** kids think they can take it for a little joy ride without your permission.
