Depends on the tires specs.

If the Max pressure is 44 lbs, then 40 is fine.

40 psi, are you kidding? Cold tire pressure for the Prelude is 28 psi.

No, 40 psi is not ok, over-inflated tires lead to improper tire wear and more "wear and tear" on suspension components.. 28 psi is the recommended pressure..

If you really want to be sure, you will have a sticker located in the car regarding the proper tire psi for your particular vehicle.. it will be located either in the glove box or the drivers side door jam..

If the tire has a higher than stock max pressure rating, like say 44, then its fine at 40.

The tires that were on from the factory have a lower rating.

If you run 28 lbs in a tire designed for 44 lbs max, you'll have more drag, and outer tire wear.

40 should be fine.

Just look at your tires. I should tell you the max air presure on it.

32, 32, 32! Raise PSI, you will wear tires faster. Lower PSI, you will get bad gas miliage. If you're in need a traction, drop to about 20 PSI for your tires to stick well, yet remember to raise them back up...

The PSI that will work best changes depending on the type of tires, and the driving conditions. It should not be based on the rating given for the factory all-season tires.

Example: My Yokohama A520's have a max of 44 psi. They wear evenly at about 38. For best performance, 34 up front and 32 in the rear work well, since they have stiffer sidewalls than most. A tire that doesn't have as stiff a sidewall will need more air for the best performance.

My winter tires, on the other hand, have a maximum of 35 psi, and I only run 28.

The sticker in the doorjam only works for the OEM tires.
