I got mine for $50 and I have seen a few of them go for $75~150. Is your dad trying to get one out of a 92+ car? He can't use that in a 88~91.

Too much, you can get good hydraulic-clutch D-series trannies for less than $300 and good cable-clutch D trannies for less than $200. $600 is getting into B-series territory. For around that price, you can get a completely rebuilt D with all new internals.
