You MIGHT overheat without a thermostat. Do a search and you'll see why. If you're going through the hassle of removing it then just pay a few dollars and buy another one.

ok your thermostat is used to reach operating temps. it will cause you to run rich.. you will never hit the right temp on your engine... but it will run... but why not take the time to put one in, it doesnt make it faster or anything.

You sure about that?

If it stays open you won't get heat, coolant circulates too quickly or so on....

If it stays closed you will overheat because no coolant is circulating....

I edited my post and said MIGHT.

The coolant circulates too quickly and doesn't have the proper time to absorb heat from the cylinder walls.

yeah! went to auto zone and bought a new one-it's just that we had put in a new one before the swap and some how the new one ended up working for like 1 week and when we took it out it was bent out of shape. Compared to the new one - so we boiled some water and notice one work the other was broken. We almost thought it was the water pump, thank god.

You can run your car without a thermostat. It will simply take longer to bring it up to temp.

If you live in a cold area, it may cause damage to your engine.

A thermostat is like a switch, when the engine feels that it needs to cool down, the thermostat will open and let the coolant reach the radiator and allow more coolling. If it does not need it, then the thermostat will remain closed and that's it.

If you want to test yours, remove it and put it in boiling water. If it works, you should see it open slowly. If it does not open, it is dead... Get another one...

DOn't want to keep a shot thermostat in your car, you may overheat if it remains closed...

How bad was it bent ? Maybe you installed it the wrong way. Anyways I suggest getting another thermostat and putting it in. You can do harm to your engine over a long period of time with out a thermostat.
