Default b16/GSR won't run. Cam timing? Ignition timing? Gremlins?

I've been working with my motor all weekend, and haven't had a lot of luck getting it running well enough to insure and drive. FYI, I'm running a hondata powered OBD1 B16 block, with a OBD2 GSR head and jrsc. I'm also running an OBD2 -> OBD1 adapter, P28 ecu, and DSM 440cc injectors.

The first problem was with my timing. I locked my cams into place using the provided holes, and set the crank at 0. I then installed the cam gears, and set them to that lines were pointing at each other like so ( 0-)(-0 ). I think it ended up being -4/-4.

The problem that caused was that now my base ignition timing was now at about 20 btdc. Needless to say, the car ran terribly.

My head and block are both stock, and haven't been milled.
Everytime I try to set up the cam gears, it looks like I'm off a tooth in my timing belt. Either that, or my belt just doesn't fit right (b16 belt, b16 water pump).

On a side note, I pulled my plugs to check them out (new BKR7E-11).
1- black with soot
2- super clean with a slight film
3- same as #2
4- same as #1

wacky **** is happening, and I'm lost for any new ideas.

well i dont know what kind of cam gears you are using (stock?) however the stock ones will have 4 marks on them, all of which must make a straight line with one another. like this: (-O-)(-O-). take a ruler and make sure they are perfect, because even though the two inner marks look aligned, it doesnt mean that the outer ones are.

also, the link in your sig is incorrect

Thanks Keebler.
I suck at teh internet.

As for the motor, the cam gears are now lined up, and the timing looks to be really close. However, for some strange reason, I can't get it to run right. It appears that my spark plugs in cylinder 1 and 4 are black with soot, yet plugs in 2 and 3 are really clean.

I'm baffled.....
Could my Nology wires be letting me down?
Could my distributor be faulty?

How could cylinders 2 and 3 not be firing, yet 1 and 4 are?

wacky stuff.....

still having the problem.....
I'm about to try a different ecu, distributor, and if necessary, injectors.
