Default Question about seats????

hey, it would not let me post under a more apporopriate category since i am a "trial user"?

Anyway, i am sure you guys are gonna hate me for this, but i dont drive a honda or import car of any kind. I do a little competing (rockcrawling) in whats left of a 91 jeep yj. the reason i came here is to ask you guys a question about racing seats. i figured no one spends more time in a racing seat then you, so....... The normal seats everyone uses in competition are these hard plastic things you can buy from summit for 40 bucks. if your roll, your back will hurt for weeks if you have those in your jeep. my last seats i bought for a $100 off a friend of a friend who had them in his honda. they were called tenzo-r..something. they were kinda ugly but ok for a while, but they got pretty ripped up after a year or so. now i am looking for some new ones that are built to last for a while.
I have been looking at sparcos and corbeaus, i really like the way they look and feel but damn they are spendy. i am not looking to spend more then 300 bucks or so, because after all they will probably get used pretty hard. what would you guys reccomend that is durable, comfortable and not too spendy? does anybody know where i could find some nice seats like this used?

thanks in advance, and sorry for bringing a domestic vehicle into your boards here.

But the sound of it, i'd say you'd be better off retrofitting some nice OEM seats from another make. In Honda OEM seats, the 89-91 Civic Si or CRX Si seats are quite comfy with excellent lateral support, better in fact than a lot of wannabe aftermarket race seats. That generation of seats was made by Recaro if i'm not mistaken. And you can usually find some very mint ones for <$200 pair. Shop around locally otherwise you'll end spending a fortune on shipping...

CRX seats:

We put Geo Storm seats in our Land Cruiser rock crawler. $40. Our thought is that it is better to replace $40 seats 10 times than to buy one set of $400 seats.

The problem with asking this question in this forum is that most of the road racing seats are going to be way too restrictive for rock crawling. You'll be surprised how much you need to move around once you can no longer move at all. I would suggest welding a mount to the floor pan that will accept several configurations of OEM seat rails so that you can cycle through a bunch and see what you like. Junk yard will be your friend.

hey, thanks for the replys. i cant use seats out of a production car because they have not got provisions for a 5 point harness.

Travis, i have my seats on tubular rails that are welded to the cage. if the seat can physically fit in the jeep, then i can "rig" mounts for it. i have driven a buggy that had sparco fixed back buckets seats in it before, and man was it luxery. i was still able to move around enough to see what i needed to see, but i was held down tight enough that i didnt get jolted around too much. the more i think about it, the more i like the idea of going woth those kinda seats.

Well I do have an Option.
I currently have a sale going on SPARCO FIA comp seats.
The Rev package with steel comp brackets is starting at $899.99
and so on. If you need new seats and harnesses I currently have a package for that to at a big savings.

I also have Kirkey racing seats. they are all mettal, I find them "comfy" I have them in my Honda S2K-02 and drove that from NC to Maine..
I think they would be better for your jeep. ( I would love to sell you some sparco if you would like them) The kirkey's have a removable cloth padding that snaps on and off so that you could take them out and wash them in the washing machine.

IF you would like the SPARCO'S I have no problem selling them to you.
http://www.spectorracing.com (look under racer package deals)

But I realy do think the Kirkey's are going to be your best bet. they are 188.99 with cover, if the cover gets all messed up then its $68.99 for a new one. My covers in my daily driver have lasted 1 year so far and still look new.

If you have any more Questions please feel free to post or call
888.833.RACE (7223)

hope this helps!
Ralph Howe.

An Evo 2 or even an Evo 3 might be a good seat. They are designed for larger drivers, meaning they are wider between the bolsters. However, a normal driver in an Evo 3 will have a lot of room to lean, shift, and twist as necessary when crawling. I don't know that I would be comfortable in my Sparco Corsa (from the CRX) in a rock crawler. Maybe I'll stick it in the Wrangler for a day and see how it feels

SPECTORracing, if i was strapped with cash i would probably take you up on that offer. the problem is, i am also a starving college student. i am hoping to find some slightly used seats somewhere around here so i dont have to get hit for shipping and all.

the other day there was some really nice sparcos on ebay, i was gonna bid on them when i got back from work, but i got home too late. they ended up going for only $280 and they were only about an hour from me so i could have picked them up.
anyone local (pacific northwest) know of anybody who has some seats they want to sell?
