Yes, takeout the cable gear drive from your old tranny and put in the new tranny. You will not need the vss if you have cable speedo drive.

It's really not a big deal, everything fits the same.

well he will need VSS if he has a Vtec motor, its a damn site chaper to use the Vtec ecu to switch it than an aftermarket alternative cobble job.

Yup, you're correct. I have a B with vtec but it came that way. My CRX don't know about newfangle technology.

He doesn't need the VSS. The EF has a "speed pulser" built into the speedometer that will give the speed signal required for Vtec.

lol and what drives the speedometer? you made my day.

Simple, I have a working cluster, I have no speedometer cable. Its driven off the tansmission mounted VSS versus the Speedometer cluster based VSS., you don't HAVE to have a cable to have a speedometer. But if he wants Vtec to work he needs VSS , and needs it one way of the other, or he needs expensive alternatives to get it to work.
I bet he has a Cable type cluster but a JDM transmission that has a electronic VSS sending unit. If thats the case he needs to change it to a cable type drive.

I had the same problem, took me months to figure it out. dont ditch the vss, im 99% sure that its not just used for a v-tec signal. my car used to cut out at speed with it disconnected. u need to get yourself an aftermarket electronic speedometer and wire that in(i used a digital display rev-counter with a bit more resistivity on the counting circuit - complicated but cheap, i calibrated it by following my mates car on the mobile fone). you can remove the old speedo and place it there on a blanking plate(i know i did), or you could try and fit one from a later model but that seemed a bit too awkward and would probably mean a whole new cluster. plus a digital one looks really trick!
or you could put a cable gearbox in...
