I could be wrong, but i always thought that the "ridges" were a part of the cap, I believe that these tires back then were re-treads. They took old tires, and put new caps on them to make race specific tires. I'm sure John could explain better, and I might be miles off base with my explanation.

Hi Jokerluv; I got the low down on the poster it was one of the first made in the mid 50's early 60's and this was not a recap. It was the first drag slick and the small dimples up by the contact patch were to make the slick stiffer, and when that did not work they changed the look and that is what you see today on the M&H slicks.
