Default sping rates for h22 civic cx

ive been searching for the answer i am now more confused then ever

i need some advise on spring rates for a koni yellow ground control setup for my h22a 92 civic hatch

newman wrote "My old EK H22A hatchback had Teins on it and it was 700 front / 400 rear, and it drove great on the street... firm, yet nice & smooth (not bouncy like some setups I've been in). "

in another post newman wrote "You can run either spring rates on the H22 Civic - Integra rates (500/400) or Civic rates (400/300), as I've run them both on the race track and driven with both setup on the street. "

tom (b18c5-eh2) told me "Get custom rates bro, and go a bit stiffer in the rear than the front, or run the same rates front and rear and add a rear swaybar to counteract understeering."

this is for mostly a street car weekend warrior
im more into drag racing but i want my car to handle great all around without sacrificing daily drivability

i dont mind it being stiff but i dont want it to be too uncomfortable for street driving on these shitty nj roads

Guide to a street car suspension:

Stock. I love driving car's with stock suspension on public street, they're so soft and comfortable. I once drove a Lexus ES300 for 4 hours straight, talk about a confortable ride. Much more so then my Integra.

You dont set the suspension on your car up for the engine thats in it.

You set it up for what kind of racing you plan on doing.

Theres a million threads on what rates to start with for what types of racing. Take a hint and start searching.

go with 4-500 front and depending on how smoothe you want the ride, go with 3-400 rear. for a mostly street car id say 350 rear is pleanty, 300 might even be better.

The H-motor adds another ~85 lbs over the front wheels (compared to b-motor), which will affect the balance of the car...

The general consensus is 35-65lbs more than a B16A.

Although most of that weight is above the front axles, I think a beginner 450/600 spring rate setup would make the car work just fine. The front end would probably push a little more compared to a B-series. If anything I'd think you would want more rear spring rate in an H22 Civic, but then again, I know nothing about H22 Civics.

Me neither.

Thats why i'm hoping with some experience can help out. I wouldnt be so quick to discount the effect of all that extra weight over the front axle. Even if its "only" 65 lbs, take 65 lb in free weights and strap it to your valve cover. Think there will be a difference in how the car feels?

The only experience that i have with a H22 Civic. Is with a 1996 H22 HB. THe car had Si suspension all arround and ayb agx and neuspeed Sports. The car was VERY soild in the corners. But UNofrtunatly i could not really push the car that hard in the corners because of the Axle bind But it was FAR more stable than my Stock Lude thru the corners.
If you are driving your car Daily... then there is something to be said for a progressive rate spring. Nice and smooth on the street and pretty tight on a auto=x and drag.
Buddie ran a 00 Si with the same setup as above and arround town (upstate ny) Crap for roads the car was almost NO different than stock! And a took a NICE "set" in the corners...
There will be a pretty big trade off between the Progressive and the Linear rate spring.... Personally i will be going with Linear rates

Good luck and let us all know.

the axle angle is the big problem with h22 civics, not the extra weight. when pushed really hard in corners or even in a straight line(on oem 90-93 teg axles) the axles tend to bind and snap. the weight is only 35lbs more than a b18c. so if you had a b18c with p/s and a/c and someone has a h22 with no accesories, they will be about the same weight.

anyways, the person who suggested 600# rears, i think that is a little extreme for a daily driver that he said wants a smoothe comfortable ride but still handle really nice. i would not go over 400 rear if i wanto to expect the ride to bo comfortable.

I'm going to be doing the same exact swap except mine is going to be a F20B in my cx. I"m still deciding also on spring rates also. But I"m going to probably run 450 front and 500 rear. And I"m getting a custom rear sway bar done. Going to need the get the back end to rotate pretty damn hard, trying to offset the weight in front a little. But let me stop, You try try to do a little front end weight reduction that is what i have planned when its all said and done. My car is mostly going to be setup for autox but their is no reason why you can't run the same spring rates on the street. I"m run 400 and 450 on ef hatch and drive it every day with no problems and it rides great, just make sure you put them on full soft.

you also live in NC where you have flat roads with pretty nice weather. take a trip up to potthole ville usa, also know ans pittsburgh and see how friendly 600lb rear rates are.

I'm currently swapping a h22 in my civic too. I have 350 in the front and 320 in the rear on my coupe. It is supposedly for mainly street... I have a coupe, which is a little heavier in rear, and a CF hood, which should help with balance. I also have an ITR sway in the back. do you guys have any suggestions as to how to combat the understeer in a more front heavy FF car? how much weight can I save if I drop the AC?

been there done that. But still not sure what to do. Should I try to lighten the car? and does it matter where the weigh comes from, ie fonrt of car, or rear?

you will want to remove weight from the front of the car as much as possible, then from the highest point(ie. sunroof if you have one) and corner weight the car when done.
