Default Damaged spoon valve cover courtesy of the U.S. Postal Service.

I am so pissed right now. First off thanks to B2FiNiTY for selling me the valve cover for a good price and for the quick shipping.

So I get home from work and my grandmother tells me there is a box for me and that she told my bro not to open it which he did. It sucks cause I didn't see what condition it was in when it came. So anyways Im looking at it and the first thing I noticed was the condition of the paint. There are little bumps on most of the edges of the valve cover which really doesn't bother me because they are barely noticeable.

Now for the real shock. I flip it over and am looking at all the edges. When you get to the upper left hand corner where the oil cap would go I notice a crack right on the corner. Not just a paint crack but a crack all the way through the valve cover. The crack is about a 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch long. The part from the side of the crack to the bottom of the cover is dented in. Now looking at it the gasket may seal just fine but I don't know for sure.

Looking at the side of the box where the crack was at you can see a little hole poked in the box at about the right area. Also on the same side of the box there is a big hole where the nipple for the valve cover vent hose poked through the box.

Luckily for me, B2 (thank you) insured it so I will go down and see what the post office says and let everyone know what happened along with some pics tomorrow if I can since I don't have a digital camera. So really the only question I have is what can I do to fix it or do you think the gasket will seal ok? Of course without pics it might be hard to tell. Sorry for such a long post but I had to vent which most would have done in this situation.

I'd be raising hell with the postal service. They'd better pay up.

How does it work? Do they give you the money for the item with shipping and everything or what. It was wrapped with wrapping paper but luckily it didnt get thrown out. I cut out all the shipping labels and such. The fragile sticker, the Postal Service sticker, and the insured sticker. There should be no confusion.

Should have been wrapped in bubble wrap and box stuffed w/ peanuts.

It was sent in the box it came in from Spoon. The valve cover was wrapped in a few layers of bubble wrap and it was sittin on a full bag of packing peanuts. When you open the box there was a piece of cardboard laying on top of the valve cover. It was new and never opened except for the box where B2FiNiTY opened it to take pics for the For Sale ad in the classifieds section.

For future reference, foam peanuts don't work very well...

I'd suggest densely packed newspaper or kraft paper if available.

I would definately persue a claim with the postal service in that case.

Have fun with the process... actually, Dennis will have to have all the fun.

The sender has to file a claim with the courier. It could take as long as 6 months, depending on their cooperation. Insurance claims suck big nuts.

Man thats a long time. I'll have to get a hold of Dennis. He must have some sort of ESP or something. Before he shipped it he said he was going to insure it cause he had a bad feeling about it. I told him not to jinx it. lol I guess he did. J/K Dennis.

HaHa! No I didnt get to see how he wrapped it because my bro tore into it before I got home from work. There are 2 big holes and 1 little hole in the box on the side the crack was on and on the other side there is 1 big dent and a few small dents in the cardboard.

unless you are sending either a flat rate envolope or a letter that you dont care if it makes it or not. i never send it via usps.

you never know how long it will take.

for stuff like valve covers and whatnot, its best to send it fedex, ups, or airborne express (they offer ground too)

Yeah I thought it was kind of weird he would do it USPS. Of course unloading the UPS truck at work everyday gives me a scare sometimes too.

Got your PMS mires and replied back to you.

Here's my take. I wrapped it very thoroughly with bubble wrap all around the valve cover AND reinforced it with more bubble wrap below and some random stuff above + cardboard.

It was not cracked at all when I sent it. It was immaculate except the teeny tiny bubbles which are on ALL spoon valve covers.

I wrapped the item with wrapping paper because Mires told me he wanted to keep the box in good condition so I did so.

I also chose USPS as the way to send it because they have always been very good to me. Quick shipping and they take more care than UPS.

I spent the extra money to get it insured and delivery confirmation also.

I made note to the person to stamp FRAGILE on the box and he did so. There is no excuse other to blame the shipping company, USPS.

Yeah, UPS broke my ITR intake cam when I sold it to Smokey 2.0
I did not insure it, so I only got $100 back
Now I insure everything I ship.

Yeah of course. Check the sig man.

Here is a little illustration I did to show how the damage looks.

The little half moon shape is the way the bottom is dented in a little bit. The crack is right there on the side where it is dented in. Ill get a pic posted tomorrow to show exactly what it looks like.

that looks like a pretty hard fix, well not hard, but just may take some time because it looks like that peice is pushed in. i would try to knock it out, which i doubt it will work. just use the stock gasket, and add some extra gasket maker to that part of it.
