Painters tape. It doesnt have alot of adhesive on it, so it doesnt leave mung on your paint when you pull it off. Available at home despot, etc for $2-$3/roll, in stylish blue and purple.
The lights are taped not to protect them, but to protect everyone else if a rock flies up and shatters a headlight/foglight/etc lens, plastic wont be deposited on the pavement which could cut a tire.
