As for the distance it also depends how the headlights are aimed.

Ask Miraiz on this board his is a real JDM 98spec.

they will light the whole street if you aimed them this way but "everyone" would flash you...mine are set a tick below---the center of bulb height at bumper---at approx. 30'. it's a guess but i get great coverage and no "flashes" from oncoming traffic. kinda neat seeing the light line end right at their dashboards

i put lexus IS300 bulbs in my 97 itr spec housing and it came out pretty good i think.. you also have to understand that 97 projector is not designed for an HID light like a 98+ is.. i.e from what i noticed 98+ is a lot more sharper and smaller housing as well.. mine dont shoot that far but thats because i aimed them too low.. great coverage on the sides though.. i have to raise them up.. i didnt do this because its so hard to align them! and i dont want to mess with them for like an hour straight like i did last time

Lights from far away

Headon stading up

Headon level with the headlights

While driving down the street. Notice the color and how it hits the white lines and reflectors

I was wondering myself about the mugen cf hood. I only know of the fiberglass version of the hood, not the cf version. can anybody clear this up?

I've seen HID's in my buddies R (USDM front) and it seems that his is much brighter and whiter than your setup...I have also been in a 2K1 M3 and the lights seem much brighter than what yours show...I dunno, maybe it's just the pics

I think Mike modified them to give them more of a blue color. Since I've also had a 98 spec conversion with the Honda HID's, I can tell you they are usually a whiter color after warmup. My WRX ones should be here today! Can't wait.

Acutally your wrong in all those fields. I have 98+spec OEM HID's now with my special touch. A friend has the normal 98+spec OEM HID's with nothing done to them. When we parked next to each other mine made his look yellow. We also have a X5 with HID's which also looked yellow after I put mine next to them as with (audi, new M3, S2K, etc...) How did I do that? Well I just went to all my friends places who own those cars and compaired them. When I get a chance I will see if I can grap a picture of them side by side.
Oh yeah, the camera was taking some bad pictures that night. Joy of a digital camera at night!

Oh yeah ask Mike (IPS racing) and he will even say that these make normal HID's look yellow).
Here's a picture of the whole HID unit taken out with the reflectors still attached to the lights, etc... Basically the whole unit minus the dome projectors when I was working on them.
Thats a normal 98 spec OEM HID vs. my setup

What looks yellow now? haahahaha
