I am getting ready to install my pistons and rods in my block.

Who has filed their rings to the JE spec's

Should I hone the cylinders and then measure the bore with a macrometer, then use that to file the rings

or should I put the ring into the cylinder then measure the gap inside the engine.

I have never done this and have considered having a shop do it, and how much would it cost roughly???

Or is it straight forward and I could do this myself?

This is for JE file fit piston rings on a d16z6

Put the ring in the cylinder. Push it down about an inch using the underside of a piston (this will allow you to push it down evenly). Then measure the gap.

-Install the second ring or even the oil ring on one piston.
-Place the ring that you want to measure on the cylinder, use the top of the piston and puch it down until the second or the oil ring is blocking the piston to goes down further.

You want to use the ring in the piston, so that you will get an even height on the rings down the cylinder.

You can use a file, just makesure to clean up the sharpt edging after you had file it, so that the ring don't get stuck in the groove.

what method do I use for filing them according to the bore of the cylinder?

you can either get a ring filer, which is a nice piece of tool and easy to use.

Or you can simply put the ring on a vise and use a file to fiel it down, make sure you file them squaerly and evenly throughut the cut and clean off the rough cut around the edges.
