(opinion) Those of you with tranny problems, was it ever the same afterward?
Im having some tranny/clutch/axle(not sure which yet) issues with my R, and tranny problems is the one thing that I have dredded from day one of having the car. Of all the things to go wrong, this is the one I feared most. For me, the ITR trans feels perfect and gives the car such a smooth feeling when shifting from gear to gear. Smooth, direct, and easy shifts. Its one of those things that gives the car a great "feel" and I would hate to lose that. It would totally take away from the driving experience. Im hoping its not a tranny problem but it would be my typical kind of luck. Any of you that have had tranny problems, and either had serious work done or totally rebuilt the tranny, was it ever the same afterward? Do I have hell to look forward to when I get it repaired (if it is in fact a trans problem)?
i had a warranty issue w/ 3rd gear when I first got the car...It was locking out of and sometimes grinding....they fixed it and not a problem at all since
When I bought my car the mainshaft bearings were whining, so I got the owner to knock some money off the car because I planned to repair it. Since I was cracking open the transmission, I decided to replace the 1-2-3-4 synchros, Mainshaft Input/Output Bearings, Countershaft Input/Output bearings, and an ATS 4.929 Final Drive in place of the OEM unit.
Once my tranny was torn down, I found out that the stock final drive had 3 teeth broken off of it, and that was also contributing to some of the noise. Good thing I had already purchased an ATS 4.929.
I got the tranny rebuilt by a local for a killer deal, got the transmission back and put it in the car. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear at high RPMs still produced a grind in the transmission. All the other gears are more butter than before, and even shifting from 4th down into 3rd is butter...What gives?
I talked to a friend of mine who works with the guy who rebuilt my transmission. My friend also had his ITR transmission rebuilt by the same guy, his transmission also still had a 3rd gear grind.
Well we thought maybe we were just doomed to deal with 3rd gear issues. We went through and made a list of of the parts each of us had placed into our transmissions...identical parts lists. He had rebuilt other transmissions for people we knew that operate without a hitch.
The one thing we were missing? A new 3rd gear. Everyone else replaced theirs when rebuilding the transmission - I wish I had known that at the time as it was only another 95 dollars. I will probably rebuild my transmission again, as this guy provides cheap labor.
Just make sure you get all new synchros, bearings, and new gears for any that give you problems. I think you'll be ok if you rebuild.
